idk what category to set this too?!?!?!
Recently I was looking up the new Epic Mickey Rebrushed remake game and some things i noticed about it as a longtime fan of the game having played both games as a kid is that its noticebly softened in its horror approach. Epic mickey isn't inherently a horror game, but it is supposed to have lots of dark horror elements as the whole point of that game is a departure from Disney family friendly appeal. I was comparing the concept art and game screenshots and idk the tone is so different. I kinda hate it. No doubt the game looks good and what the new team has done is phenomenal for a 15 year old Disney game, but something tells me they didn't quite get it. Because of this and my replaying of Amnesia Dark Descent recently, I've thought about what horror really used to be back in the mid-late 2000s and early 2010s.
This has been something I've noticed that horror really isn't what it used to be back then. A lot of older horror media was so much more well made and creative in its approach back then. You just don't see that kind of dark edgy grim horror mixed with a somber melancholic whimsy feel anymore. That almost out of the world, unexplainable feeling or feeling of being in some kind of dark dream. I feel like with silent hill being way bigger now as of Konami revitalizing the IP, i've seen more horror stuff appear which excites since I love horror, but idk it just doesn't feel the same or having the true horror alot of older horror media gave me as a kid and as an 19 year old. Amnesia really captures that essence of what horror was back then. Amnesia fits into the lovecraftian/eldritch horror genre which I learned isn't as widely popular mainly because it's hard write good cosmic horror well could explain why I don't see it as much now.
Don't know if anyone else feels this way, but I really do miss when horror really was this blend of dark whimsy melancholia and edgy grim horror. Im upset that a lot of old horror stuff from when I was little was brought back, but sanitized and softened in its delivery. As for Epic mickey I will admit that the old concept art only looked that way because Warren Spector was given full freedom to do whatever before presenting it to Disney, but still.
Some other examples of horror that got softened and santizied overtime is Fnaf. I've lost my interest in fnaf ever since sister location. Watched a video by TheRetroDude on fnaf and its made me remember why the game was a perfect horror game and why it stood out at the time. I''ll rant about my feels on fnaf in another blog, but its another example of horror being sanitized.
Regardless, I mourn 2000s and early 2010s horror and as a pushback against the sterilized and softened approach to horror I've been working on a animated series for years inspired by 2000s and early 2010s horror and the way horror used to be beautiful but also haunting. I'm still building the story, but once I'm in film school i'll really take it to the next step!
(had a hard time structuring this lol, hopefully it made sense)

I miss late 00's-early 2010s horror in media
