on watching steven universe in 2025

i finished binge-watching the Steven Universe series (og series, movie, and future) a few weeks back, and I still can't stop thinking about it. 

It's such a precious, well-aged show. Looking back (especially with the wedding episode) I think it was a miracle that it aired (though it is sad that it had to even be contested against in the first place) and even after being deprived of, what was it, 1 to 2 whole seasons? The team still pumped out banger after banger of an episode. 

Focusing on Future now, while I've heard the opinion that Future was "unnecessary" or even "too adult for a kids' show", to me, Future felt extremely valid and did very well in exploring Steven's trauma after the whole debacle of the original 5 seasons (and movie). When his life wasn't being threatened externally, the stillness and calmness of the "happy ever after" gave Steven's mind and body the quietness to really reflect and process on all that had happened. Watching his spiral honestly reminded me of my own negative experiences and how I didn't handle them the best I could. 

While I didn't physically turn into a gem monster, I still felt horrible and monstrous on the inside. And it showed in my behaviour and attitude. Seeing the episode of him finally snapping and its resolution flooded me with a whole tsunami of tears and feelings. I had to take a break and spend some time with loved ones LOL

But all that's just to say that I truly revere the show and everyone on the team. It was beautifully produced -- from music and ambient sounds, to character and relationship writing, to animation, and voice acting. Everything about this show warms the cockles of my heart. I'm so grateful to have been in the timeline where Steven Universe exists. 

And Lars of the Stars is coming soon too!!!! I'm so pumped!!! Even though there isn't (to my knowledge) a timeline of when the show is coming out, just the prospect of it coming out in my lifetime is enough to make me excited!!
