I think throwing together a blog post with my thoughts concerning the weekly new comics might be a fun idea. I'll be listing the books as I read them and only really discussing the ones I have strong thoughts on because I read too many new release books to write about each one every time. There WILL be spoilers, so let this serve as your warning.
Gotham City Sirens: Unfit for Space #1
Well, I guess the thruple allegations with Ivy, Harley, and Janet from HR are true. While I am always happy to see polyam representation, I feel that Leah Williams is the wrong person to be handling it here for reasons not entirely appropriate for Spacehey. I am excited about Despero being involved, though, he's an underused Justice League baddie in my opinion.
Secret Six (Vol 5) #5
I am disappointed with Jay's slaughter of the enemies and his attempt to murder Amanda Waller. While I certainly understand the trajectory the character has been on, and am interested to see how it will wrap up next issue, I liked Jay and Jon together and had hoped that the Superman-ness of Jon would've rubbed off on Jay a bit. I guess the Dreamer/Jon thing might actually happen and the fan reactions will be interesting to see.
Batgirl (Vol 6) #9
Cassandra Cain is one of my favorite fictional characters of all-time and this Brombal run has been excellent. This issue was no exception. The fight with Bronze Tiger was great (seeing him in general is always lovely, as well). And the reveal that Jade Tiger, Bronze Tiger's son, is also Cass's half-brother was expected but welcome. Cass has a long history of forgotten siblings which is a lot of fun and makes sense for who David Cain and Lady Shiva were. I am eagerly awaiting the next issue.
Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong 2 #2
Whoof, that was a really color-by-numbers comic with some incredibly rough dialogue. But, seeing Kong fight a kaiju Killer Croc was awesome. I think that for such a big-deal crossover, these books really deserve a better writer than Buccellato.
Immortal Thor #25
Hot diggity this book was so good. I loved the sacrifice Skurge makes with the bridge, again echoing the Simonson run as much of this run has. I cannot wait to see what happens in The Mortal Thor series. I also am inordinately proud of my prediction that Thortal (Thor the mortal) would be named Sigurd Jarlson which is another call-back to Simonson's time with the character. The fight between Thor and Donald Blake was also quite excellent, especially the ending and the pages of black which built tension. It is a great time to be a Thor fan.
Daredevil (Vol 8) #23
I am a lot more positive about the Saladin run than many others. I was really into the Matt the Priest Exorcist stuff. Regardless, I do feel that since the exorcism stuff ended, the run has spun it's wheels a bit, particularly the romance subplot between Matt and Nyla has not been engaging and this issue brought a cheating element to things with Matt wanting to rekindle things with Elektra and Nyla being suspicious over Matt's frequent nightly endeavors. Exhausting stuff. That being said, the Taskmaster scene was a bundle of fun, especially Tasky trying to figure out why Daredevil fights the way he does and then his quick but amusing exit when Elektra gets into the fold.
Captain America (Vol 12) #1
Here begins the Chip Zdarsky's era of Captain America and I am frankly here for it. First and foremost, the decision to set it a week after Steve wakes up from the ice was a rather refreshing move, and him working covert ops for Thunderbolt Ross was unexpected but makes so much sense. I cannot wait to see where the arc with Dr. Doom goes, as well as the clear parallels between John Walker and this new kid David Colton. The scene with Reed Richards and Cap discussing Doom was what completely sold me on the run, though. The action figure and Reed talking about how Cap inspired him was just a wonderful touch. And "Humanity is the source of Mole Man's problems..." is my favorite line of the week. The one strong criticism I have is that Cap's new covert ops costume really sucks.
Bring on the Bad Guys: Green Goblin #1
I tend to be pretty dismissive of these one-shot events/arcs that Marvel really likes to do. They tend to have less than zero impact on anything, introduce a big scary bad guy just to get forgotten immediately after, and are generally written pretty poorly. The first part of this story (Dr. Doom) really seemed to be following this trend. But, this issue really surprised me. The Goblin stuff was genuinely well told and actually mildly spooky. Exactly the sort of thing I wanted to see out of this story. The best part was the home invasion sequence shown from Goblin's POV in 9 panel grids, just some fun stuff there. The whole Sister Sorrow stuff in the back was uninteresting, but the quality of the Goblin story was enough to make this issue worth reading.
Absolute Green Lantern #4
There's some intriguing stuff going on in this book. I like the cosmic horror tone and the way the mystery is being told non-chronologically, but I wish the pace would speed up a bit. There's some exciting cameos and mentions in this issue, though, that got me hyped as a big GL fan: Tomar-Re and Sinestro both have little cameos and the Weaponers of Qward get mentioned (Qward is spelled without the 'w' in the Absolute universe apparently). And then Hector Hammond being revealed at the end as a bad guy for the next arc has me extremely excited because I adore Hammond. I am also glad that John Stewart doesn't seem to be dead, but is on/in Oa, whatever that means in this case.
And that's it, a whole week's worth of new releases. Pretty solid week actually. If I had to pick a favorite book, I'd have to go with Immortal Thor #25, but I had a good time with most of everything here.

I haven’t yet gotten to read absolute green lantern. It seems to be the lowest on peoples tier lists for the absolute universe from what I’ve seen, but I don’t think people are patient enough. Maybe it’s a slow burn sort of like Absolute Superman. Wonder Woman, Martian and Batman all seemed to jump pretty fast into their roles and action.
I think in many ways, AGL is written for trades in a way that the rest of them aren't. I also think that the manga-esque art (which is a visual reference to Parasyte in many ways) was off-putting to many.
