Art can be a mirror of our reality, reflecting what we are in this point of time. I think that with the rise of conservative ideology and mass consumption we see how especially in pop music becoming almost hollow. Personally, I never was a fan of pop music because if an artist is good than they are good regardless of popularity. But this is a topic I feel passionate about because this is a topic that doesn't just affect pop music and the radio. It affects music as a whole and indicates to a larger problem and how art can reflect that.
You can see this in how songs are much shorter and focus especially on a hook, the hook is the base of the song instead of the message almost like it was made for merchandising. This is because of how consumption is; the shorter songs and catchy hooks become more radio-friendly for time slots and can keep people replaying them. I don't usually like keeping up with pop music because it almost blurs together because it feels less and less creative but more and more commodified.
I don't want to make sweeping generalizations of pop listeners and fans at all, but I want to write about my own observations on how music is reflecting the rise in mass consumption and conservatism. A good example would be pop-punk and how capitalism kills subculture, the phrase "Keep politics out of punk and metal" is full of shit because PUNK AND METAL WERE CREATED TO BE POLITICAL.
THEY WERE CREATED AS POLITICAL RESISTANCE TO BIGOTED AND CONSERVATIVE IDEOLOGY AND INSTITUTIONS.
When people say that punk isn't political, it proves to me that they never wanted to listen to punk music or even be in the punk subculture. Punk has always been political and has always been anti-conservative and anti-fascist. When subculture loses its culture for a profit then it's not that subculture anymore; It's an empty hole of itself sold on shelves to masses. Making something for EVERYONE is making something for NO ONE (look at the live action Lilo and Stitch and you'll see why).
The hollow emptiness of the radio reflects how we see art as something to be sold and manufactured instead of as a beautiful and diverse piece of the human experience. Conservatism doesn't make innovation or possess creativity because creativity fuels the critical thinking that is the bane of bigoted institutions and ideology. An example of this would be how Benson Boone's brand takes a lot of inspiration from Freddie Mercury and Bruce Springstein, yet he never talks about why he takes inspiration from them. He talks about not being political, yet Bruce Springsteen wrote "Born in the USA" as a protest song to the Vietnam War.
A lot of people (myself included) enjoy older music because a lot of people wrote out of creativity and passion instead of making music for only profit. This is not to say that there is no good music now because there are really good artists and music, you have to look for what you like. But when music is treated like a commodity it becomes empty.
Support the artists you like and make the art you want to see more of. Thanks for reading my ramble.
TLDR: The rise of conservatism and mass consumption makes music feel empty because the music wasn't written with passion or with a message but instead is written with the sole goal of profit and conformity.
