a decently in depth guide for the tamagotchi 4u + how to get every character's tamatomo (wip)

note 1- the device is entirely in japanese, however there are plenty of guides that provide english translated versions of the menus/food items/etc. i'll link a few of them here when i remember.

4u cheat sheet (tumblr) ✿ translated menu guide ✿ chara likes and dislikes (in japanese only, will update when i can find a good english link) ✿ tamatalk ✿

note 2- the tamatomo (clover) stamps on the tamagotchi 4u and 4u+ plus are composed of 4 parts: a favourite item, favourite food and favourite piece of clothing/something else for that specific character (the fourth stamp can be obtained by having them in your care for 48 hours as an adult, or 72 hours total)

note 3- when the character on the 4u is a baby or child, you can only fill the happiness meter up to about halfway. when it evolves into an adult, the remaining part is unlocked and you can bring it up to the full 100 points. for some reason, the 4u skips the teen stage that every other tamagotchi device has so the growth is baby -> child -> adult -> whatever personality stage.

note 5- care mistakes = allowing the food/happy meters to deplete entirely and ignoring/missing the call to fill them (the device will beep and the attention icon will light up. when the light turns off after 15 minutes, you've made a care mistake), or leaving poop on the floor and allowing it to get sick from it. incorrectly praising/disciplining or missing a praise/discipline call doesn't count as a care mistake unlike a lot of other devices, but disciplining the tamagotchi when it's not required leads to it getting upset + the happiness dropping by a small number of points which can lead to an empty meter indirectly (providing you don't get those points back up).

after booting up the device, you'll either get ufufutchi (girl) or yochiyotchi (boy) when the egg hatches. the baby stage lasts ~60 minutes and serves as a tutorial: the tamagotchi cannot die in this stage, and it does everything that you'll need to be accustomed to when it grows up: eats, wants snacks, shits on the floor. it also gets sick twice during this period, which can be cured by going to the clover icon (5th icon on the menu, 4th option on the list).

<- yochiyotchi <- ufufutchi

after the baby stage is complete, the baby will evolve into one of two child characters based on how full the happiness meter is at the time of evolution (the child you get depends on whether the happiness meter has more than/less than 10 points filled at evolution: pokapokatchi and fuyofuyotchi for the male baby and hiyayatchi and pannakotchi for the female baby respectively.) exactly 24 hours afterwards, the child evolves into its adult stage (unless it is left with the babysitter, in which case it does not evolve until you pick it up from there/it's sent home)

<- pokapokatchi (10+ happiness, male) <- hiyayatchi (10+ happiness, female)

<- fuyofuyotchi (10- happiness, male) <- pannakotchi (10- happiness, female)

the child you get does not affect your adult character, unless you're aiming for orenetchi (he can only evolve from fuyofuyotchi)

taking care of the tamagotchi:

feeding: the tamagotchi 4u has 6 slots on the hunger bar that drop ~1 an hour (afaik the rate is the same for every single character) letting these empty is a care mistake, if left empty for 24 hours the tamagotchi will get angry and run away.

you can feed the tamagotchi with either whatever food is in the fridge or (child stage onwards) take the tamagotchi to the restaurant where they can get a variety of food. every raiseable character has liked foods and disliked foods, and some liked foods can get you part of the tamatomo/clover stamp- any food that doesn't have a strong reaction is neutral for the tamagotchi.

in the fridge there will always be a bowl of rice for the meal, and a chocolate chip cookie for the snack. all adult characters dislike the default meal and are neutral to the default snack.

sometimes, when you feed the character in the kitchen, they will misbehave at the table and refuse to eat their food (as you can guess, the empty hunger slot will not be filled if they decide to do so). disciplining the tamagotchi right after it refuses to eat will make it less likely to act up at the table, however the chance of them misbehaving at the table is never zero, regardless of life stage. the misbehaviour at the table doesnt really do anything other than make you sit through a long cutscene of them jumping around every single time (which can get annoying)

happiness: baby/child characters have a half circle of happiness to fill, and adult characters have a whole circle to fill. letting the happiness lower or raise to a certain point for certain adults can trigger the transformation to personality stage forms (more on these later), but happiness as a whole doesn't do much for babies and children other than influencing the child the baby evolves into. letting the happiness empty completely counts as a care mistake, and leaving it completely empty for 24 hours will cause the tamagotchi to get upset and run away.

happiness can be raised by-

eating liked foods

eating any snacks (this also raises weight so be careful not to feed them too many)

using items/toys (items that are liked by that tamagotchi will raise more happiness)

buying things from the department store

performing well at a game/getting a perfect score on a game (latter gives more happiness)

going to the park (if there's someone there to talk to: more on this below)

succeeding at an errand (more on this below)

going to school (only adult tamagotchis can go to school)

mastering a skill/ being praised for using the toilet, cleaning up the room or bathing by itself

meanwhile, happiness is lowered by-

eating disliked foods or snacks (need to double check)

feeding any adult the default meal from the fridge

disciplining the tamagotchi when discipline is not needed

neglect/sickness

bathing/cleanup/praise

when in the child stage, the tamagotchi will silently call to use the toilet, clean up the room, or take a shower: there is no sound for these, you must remember to check the tamagotchi every so often, but a thought bubble with a poop, a vacuum or a shower head will appear depending on what the tamagotchi wants to do.

the thought bubbles for using the toilet are seemingly random, but the child will always ask to vacuum the room at 6pm and to take a shower at 7pm. these thought bubbles last for about 20 minutes then turn off- missing one does not count as a care mistake but does mean that you lose an opportunity to teach that tamagotchi a skill.

you do not have to teach your tamagotchi any of these skills, theyre not mandatory, but they are useful and mean that the tamagotchi is a little bit less demanding.

using the toilet- go to the bathroom icon, select the first option. the tamagotchi will use the toilet, then come up to the screen and a speech bubble will appear over its head that says "i did it!" in japanese. when this happens, you must go to the clover icon and select the first option (praise). after this happens (including the praise at the end) 3 times the tamagotchi will be able to use the toilet by itself and will not poop on the floor. there are still opportunities to praise it after it uses the washroom and doing so will raise happiness a little bit, but you don't have to praise it here.

vacuum- every day at 6pm, the tamagotchi will make a mess with blocks and then stand in the middle with a sad face and the thought bubble over its head. go to the bathroom icon, select the third option (vacuum). the tamagotchi will clean up the room by itself and then ask for praise like it does when it uses the toilet successfully. after this happens (inculding the praise at the end) 2 times the tamagotchi will vacuum the room at 6pm by itself (and like with the toilet, you can choose to praise it afterwards for that extra happiness).

shower- every day at 7pm, the tamagotchi will stand in the center of the screen and the shower thought bubble will appear over its head. bathroom icon, second option, praise it, etc. after 2 times the tamagotchi will shower every evening by itself and like w the other two you can choose to praise it for doing so.

supposing that you do not teach your tamagotchi any of these skills in time, you must bathe them yourself/make them clean their room by themselves as if you leave them for a couple days without giving them a bath or cleaning their room, they will get dirty and have a chance to get sick. letting poop pile up without cleaning off the screen also has a chance to make the tamagotchi sick.

lights

good news! you do not need to (nor can you, actually) turn the lights off when the tamagotchi goes to bed or wakes up as it can do it by itself.

children sleep from 8pm-8am and adults sleep from 9pm-8am (not sure if this changes for personality stage adults, will have to double check). the baby character doesn't sleep, but will take a 5 minute nap about halfway through this stage of its life.

there are 10 adult characters on the base 4u, 5 male and 5 female. from what i've seen, the priority for evolution is care mistakes -> number of skill points (from using certain items) -> if your tamagotchi has an inadequate # of skill points for a certain character but you didn't neglect it then it will evolve into one of the five possible characters for its gender randomly.

five categories of skill points: invention (science experiment item, notebook), sport (soccer ball item, notebook), cooking (frying pan item, notebook), art (modeling clay item, notebook), fashion (makeup kit item, notebook). the baby/child starts with 0 skill points in every category, and more often than not how often you use x skill point raising item determines the character you'll get.

**all adult characters dislike default rice, sake and kale juice, and all adult characters dislike the oyajitchi bromide/remote control car item unless otherwise indicated (there are exceptions)

**like/dislike lists consist of only the base game items- i'll add in the downloadable ones later. it appears that unlike the id/idl, using or eating any of the character's liked items will get you the tamatomo instead of having to use specific ones.

**personality stage forms may have different likes/dislikes than the standard forms (seen below)

personality stages

note 1- every base character on the 4u has at least one personality ("post adult") stage they can evolve into when certain requirements are met. when these requirements are met they will stay in this stage until married off/the requirements are broken/the tamagotchi character runs away (neglect)

note 2- personality stage characters cannot wear accessories/clothes or newly learn any of the 3 base skills (toilet, bath, cleanup). if you're trying to get the tamatomo, revert the character back to its default state.

note 3- personality stages that require a wallpaper change (mamelabtchi, guru meme queen) will not happen if the wallpaper was set to the skill point boosting wallpaper when the tamagotchi evolves. to get these two personality stages, you must have the wallpaper as a non invention/fashion boosting wallpaper and THEN change it to one of the sp boosting wallpapers.

invention boosting wallpapers: laboratory living, space living, universe living

fashion boosting wallpapers: girly living (pink), jewelry box living (gray and purple), flower lounge

red text denotes how to revert the character back to its base form.

notes about the park/your backyard:

school:

once your tamagotchi character becomes an adult, it can go to school by selecting the open door icon and selecting the third option. the school is open from the time the tamagotchi wakes up to 7pm (trying to enter the school at any point after 7pm will have your character turned away at the gate). there are 5 classes corresponding to the 5 skill point categories: in order they are science class (invention), fashion class, gym class (sports), art class and cooking class. you need both the notebook item (300g, department store) and the respective skill point raising item to attend classes at school.

the first few visits to the classroom consist of "theory", aka a cutscene plays where your tamagotchi is writing in a notebook as the teacher explains stuff on a whiteboard. there are 1-3 theory classes depending on how well your character performs at the skill being taught. after theory, it's regular classes until the tamagotchi masters the skill. you can go as many times as you want to in one day before the school closes, there's no cooldown or limited amount of visits or anything.

once you have been to a certain amount of x class, your tamagotchi will "master" the skill and no longer be required to attend that class. different characters need a different amount of classes for each skill to master it: for example, memetchi canΒ  master fashion class in just a couple visits but requires many visits to master sports or cooking. you do not have to go to school, but most personality stage forms are unlocked by mastering all 5 school skills, and going to class is also a really easy way to raise happiness since you don't need to do much after pressing the button to send your tamagotchi there.

the park:

the park is a location your tamagotchi can visit at any point in the day, and it is the second option on the list from the open door icon. there are two things you can do at the park: talk to/play with a random character (first option), or play the dance minigame with the dance teacher (second option)

in the first hours of the morning, a traveling salesperson will show up (there are a few different ones i think). some sell just clothes/accessories and others sell items (this is the only way you can get stuff like the violin etc.)Β

as well, characters that don't sell stuff can be spoken to- your tamagotchi can have a talk with them, or a cutscene will play where your tamagotchi and the character will play a basketball esque game where you are trying to get the ball into a bucket (you cannot control your character in this game).

seeing certain characters (oyajitchi, lovelin) at the park triggers certain personality stage changes (oyamelojitchi, otakuromame). it seems that certain characters show up more if you are raising a certain character, and different characters can show up at different times of the day. you cannot see a certain character at the park if you are raising them, for example if you have a melodytchi you will never see melodytchi at the park.

characters ive seen: memetchi, himespetchi (she shows up as mamelovehimespe if you're raising mametchi), oyajitchi (you can't encounter his traveling cart in the park, you need to send your tamagotchi into the backyard to see that), melodytchi (she shows up more often if you have lovelitchi), lovelitchi (she shows up as lovelin if you have kuromametchi), mimitchi, orenetchi, spacy brothers (p sure they only show up if you have spacytchi), mametchi,Β
