Why are good indie games underrated?

There is like two halves of indie games popular and extremely underground to the point whenever you bring it up un public people say "what".  For example the game its not me it's my basement is only known to some people but not alot people know it. Another example is a similar game to its not me it's my basement called "don't let it out" and in this game you play as a non birany child trying to prevent a monster in their bathroom from getting out and the reflection slowly becomes more monster like. Anyways back to the topic. Let's set another example so let's say it's a summer night and your looking for an indie game to play and you come across a good game,you play it,and then ask your friends if they know about it just for them to not know.
