β€œeternal inflation could generate an infinite number of universes, none of which could communicate with any of the others”

the universe has been expanding at roughly the same rate since the big bang (or the beginning of all time).

it has been hypothesized that for a very brief moment, very early in the history of the cosmos, the universe far exceeded that rate of expansion in a hyper-powerful burst of inflation.

in less than 10⁻³² (one hundredth of a millionth of a billionth of a billionth) of a second, the diameter of the universe swelled a whopping at least 10²⁢ (one hundred trillion trillion) times.

if so, the inflationary modelΒ could help explain several important observations about the uniformity and geometry of the universe.

In the decades since the inflationary model was proposed, it has been discovered that it could lead to an extraordinary cosmic scenario. an infinite number of regions of the universe could undergo hyperinflation, one by one, throughout all of space and time.

each inflationary event would create its own set of new cosmic horizons and observable universes, which could have (or do have) physical characteristics and laws that are completely unpredictable, different, and essentially inaccessible to those created by other inflationary events.

inflation would occur for all eternity, and the universe would become an infinite multiverse, where, inevitably, every possible observable universe that could possibly exist would exist.

according to the inflationary cosmological model, our universe could be a multiverse filled with an infinite number of expanding observable universes with an infinite variety of properties.

some astrophysicists consider the inflation-induced ultiversus to be scientifically problematic.

for them, the job of science is to narrow down the number of possible explanations of the universe through observations and experiments until we have a concrete answer that is also correct; therefore, if inflation produces all possible universes, it lacks useful predictive or discriminatory power and is therefore not a meaningful scientific theory.

others disagree, arguing that the inflationary model will one day be confirmed by observation.
