All of the hyperfixations I’ve had + some interesting facts about them

I’m autistic, and I’ve had quite a few hyperfixations throughout my life (some more useful than others) so here’s all of them and an interesting fact I remember from each!

  • Horses - I was probably about 4 or 5 when I had this hyperfixation. Did you know that horses’ height is measured in hands?
  • Dinosaurs - I had this hyperfixation from probably about 6-8 years old. My favourite dinosaurs are the sinosauropteryx and the giganotosaurus. Did you know that the stegosaurus and the t. Rex actually lived millions of years apart? Also, the way that experts draw dinosaurs is actually quite strange, and if you applied it to many modern creatures they would be unrecognizable. For all we know, the diplodocus could have been chubby like a penguin!
  • Ants - I had this hyperfixation when I was about 9 or 10. I actually managed to catch and successfully raise some queen ants, but they died when I lost interest. If you’ve ever seen hundreds of worker ants with some larger ants coming out of a hole, that’s called a nuptial flight! The largest ants are future queens, while the more wasp-like ants are males. They fly into the sky with other queens and males from other colonies. The lucky queens that get fertilized burrow into the ground and start a colony, while the unfertilized queens and the males die. Actually, all worker ants (the ones that you see eating your food at picnics) are all females. The same goes for bees. Most ants follow this system, although there are some unique species that differ. There are different types of worker ants in some species, too; minors are the smallest ants that do most of the work inside the nest, majors do most of the foraging and may help with defense, while supermajors can tackle defense and larger prey items due to their strong mandibles. If you want to learn more about ants I recommend checking out the YouTube channel AntsCanada.
  • Fishkeeping - I was about 11 when I had this hyperfixation. Some of the most commonly abused fish are bettas and goldfish, which are frequently kept in containers that are much too small. Bettas should be in at least a 5 gallon tank, while goldfish are better off in a 30+ gallon tank. If you’ve made this mistake in the past, don’t feel too bad; now you know not to do it again. We learn from our mistakes. If you want to learn more about fishkeeping I recommend checking out the YouTube channel KGTropicals.
  • The Killers - I continue to have this hyperfixation but it was at its peak when I was 12. Their hit song, Mr. Brightside, was the first song they ever wrote. It was written by Dave Keuning (guitarist) and Brandon Flowers (lead singer + keyboardist) about Flowers’ paranoia about a cheating girlfriend. Also, two of the songs on their hit album Hot Fuss (Midnight Show and Jenny Was a Friend of Mine) are part of a murder trilogy along with the song Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf, part of their B-side compilation album Sawdust.
  • Green Day - I continue to have this hyperfixation and it is currently at its peak. The original songs for their hit album American Idiot were at one point stolen, which forced them to start fresh. Originally, it was called Cigarettes and Valentines.
