SMS Apps

So I've been playing with this idea of trying again to ditch my smartphone as much as possible since I hate them, but there's some things I need portably.

Well back in the day some services used to be available via sms. Like originally the reason twitter was 140 characters was because you had to be able to fit your post into a text that you sent to a phone number to post. My city offers bus schedules via sms, but not realtime data.

So I got to thinking like, I can probably fill in some of the gaps. I already did some prototyping for an "sms app" for real time bus notifications, which not even google maps or the official app does for you. Can y'all think of other stuff that'd be helpful to have through texting?

Many cellphone carriers also have emails, like 1234567890@carrier.com, so you could also look for different services that work through email, too.

They used to! I actually used them way back in high school for a project for my dad. As far as I know they've all (or most?) been shut down now though. I think they claimed too much abuse.

It still works with all the cell carriers in my area, so IDK.

Oh damn, maybe it was something they announced and never followed through on, then.

tbh it's good validation that I'm not missing anything in my thoughts. I think the case I'm working on is really easy but there actually isn't a ton of other stuff that'd be much easier over sms. Also good to know I'm not the first person to think of this <3
