What is a ''real Fan''? To me, anybody who interacts with any Medium more than as a Passing Interest is a Fan. I have finished Yume Nikki several Years ago but to this Day routinely just walk through the World for Fun.
Therefore, I would consider myself a Fan. I have drawn Fanart (Never showing it to any of you, it is terrible) I have read the Novel and the Manga (Both are bad and the Novel downright ruins Poniko).
Now, I hate 95% of the Yume Nikki Fanbase, they have weird Theories about the Game, and some oversexualize the Characters. However, I wouldn't deny that they are ''Fans'', if they interact with the Game more than once and have a continuous Interest.
Others however come to the Conclusion that if somebody likes a Medium for the ''Wrong Reasons'' they aren't a Fan but a Tourist instead, which I just consider stupid.

interesting take bro!!
i for one have never heard the term “tourist.” def adding to my vocab (not to use on others lol). that definition of yours for it also sounds different from what i’ve heard (i.e. “posers” or “fake fans”).
i haven’t seen people really discrediting another fan (you probably have had contradicting experiences but hear me out) for liking something for “the wrong reasons,” but people for sure will ostracise certain groups of fans if they do have “the wrong reasons.” that’s where you get ppl saying “i’m in BLANK fandom, but dw, i’m not like /that/ part of the fandom.” like they won’t deny someone’s legitimacy as a fan, but they’ll distance themselves from it.
on the other hand i hear people calling other people “fake fans” a lot for if they have not watched/read/listened to/played the media. i think that one’s kinda valid, but not based on frequency. like i’d still call you a fan of yume nikki, even though you said it’s been years since you played it. i wish more people would give /that/ kind of leniency. (like i haven’t listened to ABBA in years, but goddammit i’m a fan.)
