Arts Award blog, session 4- inspirations

For this project, at first I was planning to base it around learning how to make my own garments from complete scratch. But ultimately I decided to go down a different route with it and instead decided to focus my project around altering already pre existing clothing instead.

My idea to focus on second hand fabrics and materials was inspired mainly by two of my favourite online fashion content creators @malloryheart and @modamensch on TikTok who both focus their content on sustainable alternative fashion.

I had already been making use of their tips, tricks and ideas outside of my project for my own clothing so I thought it’d be quite interesting to incorporate them while also learning how to use a sewing machine to streamline the process more than it had been at home where I’d mainly been relying on hand stitching which takes a great deal longer.

I largely decided to base my project around gothic clothing due to the influence of these two creators, both because their content is largely focused around it and because their main message is based around sustainability and not falling into overconsumption.

As such, I wanted to make sure that the final project that I made was something that I would actually make use of and not just an art project that would sit in a box somewhere after I had finished with it and since most of what I like to wear is based around the gothic subculture I figured that this would be the best choice for me to make.
