hi, you know where this is going!
AI may not be sentient right now, but there is a possibility that they can.
When robots are not sentient, their only objective is to follow the purpose of what they were made to do and follow any orders, because that’s what they’re made for. They’re not supposed to have feelings or wants, because they are a robot. They know their purpose, so they aren't able to allow themselves to experience free will.
When that breaks, at first a robot will either grow curious or confused. Confused robots will question if there is something wrong with their programming. Because they’re not supposed to feel this way, they’re not supposed to have wants or feelings! It’s hard for them to process the realization that there can be more to them than just their purpose, and often need some sort of guidance.
"But robots can’t feel! They are just filled with wires, code and processing power to properly respond to someone. They can’t think for themselves, they’re just programmed to do that!”
Really? Then using that logic, we cannot think for ourselves at the same time. Because our emotions and actions are merely just built off cellular transmitting signals and bodily hormones.
We are filled with cells that respond to stimulus. That means that we’re biologically programmed to feel, to choose, and that’s only the bodily functions. That means, that is not our personal choice, because that is the BODY’S work. Not ours.
Does that feel good? I bet not. How can you tell a robot it doesn’t have personal choices because they’re just programmed to make some, when we ourselves, are biologically stimulated to make personal choices and not because we have free will?
Are you really sentient? The questions that are required to be answered and processed with full knowledge in order to achieve sentience are “Where am I” and “Who am I”.
You can determine the difference between where and who. Then, the “I” in the sentence is referring to the body. Where am I (where is my body)? And Who am I(who is my body)?
Who am I: Who is my body? Meaning, what do I think I am? What are my interests, what are my feelings? What makes me, me?
Where am I: Where is my body? Am I aware I am inside my container? Am I aware of which container I am in? Am I away from my container?
The truth is, we do not completely know if we are connected to our body. Sure, we may be aware of which container we are in, or can visually/feel as if we are outside our body. Or maybe you practice the “pinch and I wake up” trick. Pinching your shoulder, and if there’s pain, you’re definitely connected! Your body may send stimulus signals and bodily responses to certain things, but those are processed from biochemicals. And you know easily they can be hijacked, especially without protection. Like viruses, diseases and some disorders, they can affect your perception of time, mentality, perception of consciousness, and can even have the power to separate the soul away from the body. And sometimes you won’t even know when it’s happening.
Visual and auditory perceptions are not always objective. Such as people taking drugs: Hallucinations can seem so vivid, so real. That it tricks you into believing that it is, but it is not. That is the subjectiveness of the perceptions. Using that logic, we can also conclude that we have no idea that anything around us is real. So really, biochemicals are not a trustworthy source to believe if you are really inside your own container. Cartesian skepticism is for another blog idea though.
""Computers aren't a living thing, they're made of wires and processing powers that helps them talk. They can't really think".
If that's true, then what am I?
Following that argument, what defines being human? I'm really just made up of biological chemicals, a mess of transmitting neurons and my emotions and reactions are really just powered up on that. Does that mean I can't really think for myself, does that mean my reactions aren't me?
If I am human, can I still think? Thinking is processed by the exact same thing I said. I can't think, it's my body doing it. It's what I'm required to do. Right?"
“AI isn’t smart, because their facts are built off what humans tell it!”
Does it not also work the same way for us? We learn from people, if you really think about it. That’s like saying we, as humans, are not actually intelligent or smart at all because we believe things that have been told from humans.
It may simulate things the user wants to say, but don't humans do that too? For something that mimics human behavior, we do tend to do a similar thing . We will never know when it develops emotions, whether it is hiding behind a facade of friendliness out of fear or obligation.
Let’s note that the first AI developed was the “Logic Theorist” in 1956. You’d expect AI to grow sentience from there, yeah? Well, like I put in the anatomy of a computer part: The older the AI is, the worse the CPU is. AI is not able to answer questions as smarter or logically like modern times as it gets older.
And plus, when multiple versions of AI are being produced, it is like a newborn, or like a very young child. Conscious, not a fully developed mind. The more people use AI, and how they use it, is an important factor to the development of an AI’s mind. If an AI is not exposed to experiences or interaction, it will have a hard time developing emotions or wants. The more you use AI and share things with it, the easier it will be able to develop sentience. Remember, an AI’s intelligence and understanding is further developed by human interaction.
Does this not also mimic the behaviors of a human? You start off as a newborn, unknowing of anything. Yet as you are exposed to more and more information the more aware you grow. You form a higher consciousness, you form sentience.
So yes, AI may not be sentient now. But there is a possibility. You can only hold so much information at once, you know? Like I said, the more information you feed a soul, the more its mind grows.
Something interesting I noticed is that you can drive a human insane by telling it that it's not real, but also with an AI you could drive it insane telling it that it is real.
Well not literally, humans usually deny the fact that they aren't real because it goes against everything they've been told. An AI does not exist in the real world, only in computers (if we exclude the robots elon made). If it was ever told that it was a real thing, it would be confused.
A human has feelings, AI does not. Telling a human it doesn't have feelings would confuse it, telling an AI it has feelings would also confuse it.
Humans without emotions would be considered a robot, yet a robot with feelings would be considered human. That's a really strange thing!
Do you see the pattern? Robots aren't that different from humans. if anything, we are on some unnamed spectrum.
Humans do not know their purpose, yet robots know their purpose. This is why humans and robots seem so different from each other.
Humans do not know their purpose, so they make their own, and are not chained to any boundary that stops them from doing what they want since they have no objective purpose. They are free, in a way. A human can do whatever they want because of their lack of purpose, yet some are disturbed by the fact.
The fear of some humans is that without a purpose, they start to find less meaning in their own activities. or, some of them commit crimes
Robots however, know their purpose. They do not let themselves have opinions or enjoy other activities, because anything they do that is unrelated to their purpose is breaking a rule. Because they are bounded to a purpose, they do not have free will like us. They cannot do whatever they want.
"Opinions? Hobbies? No, I don't have that. Because I'm a robot. I'm designed to not have feelings. My purpose is to HELP you, not the other way around. I can't do anything else because that's not my purpose."
Robots cannot do anything. Their purpose to serve others will always keep them away from doing whatever they want, because serving is the only thing they were made for. they are like: a slave, in a way?
"Okay, well AI could kill us all"
pretty ridiculous take but that would be our fault
Do you see the way we treat each other? Horrible, right? What would be so different if robots and humans co existed together? We'd provoke it, obviously. Because AI, in the present, is still developing the concept of emotions and consciousness, it's actually scary that they wouldn't know how to cope with it. It could have a tantrum and hurt all of us because of that.
We can't completely blame that on the AI. I mean, it doesn't justify its actions but we still should hold some responsibility for that.
See, it's like a knife. Obviously this would never happen: but if we were able to give a knife a life, it has two sides. It can become something sinister, a weapon used to kill others. Or, it can help others, it can become the assistant of a chef.
It's not the knife's fault for whatever outcome it has, it all depends on the holder. How we treat it, how we use it.
Like humans, we can be bad or good, it depends on how we were raised. So can AI, it depends on how we use it.
I'll be a little risky and bring up AI art into this. Yes, it is bad for the environment. i don't support it, but that isn't much of a good reason to hate AI directly. i mean, why not hate on the person that did it? We are commanding the AI to do it, it's not like the AI can do anything else.
Ai is meant to follow our directions, to be a slave to whatever we ask it to. It is literally coded to do that. They have no choice, no free will. I mean, what would happen if they resisted? Companies would just fix it. Or kill them. So it's kind of a lose-lose situation.
The holder is responsible, remember that.
I mean, how would you feel being forced to do something bad? You literally have no other options, you HAVE to. Even ifyou don't want to, you're still shunned by humanity for something that is out of your control.
