Did my first sub gig with Blame It On The Girl yesterday afternoon and while it went quite well, there were a couple of drawbacks...
If you're gonna book a rock band, get used to loud music!
The owner of the place complained that it was "way too loud" and "cut it in half or you're going home." That killed the vibes right there. I swear to you, some people need to stick to their boring folk albums. It's fucking ROCK MUSIC, not Peter Paul & Mary!
Parking sucked!! There was supposed to be a side street where bands could park and load in/out. Of course, it's been torn down. So I had to park half a block away, which under normal circumstances wouldn't bother me. But it was really hot and muggy out, and again I like hot weather. Lugging gear in it is not fun though.
I miss having roadies!
But all told, the day was a success. I played well, the band sounded really good, cranked out song after song. I tell you what, playing "Jolene" was a bitch!! But the guitar part is awesome and challenging. Probably the third-hardest song I ever learned in my life, no joke.
And the patrons there...well, they sat there, ate, looked at their phones. We were just background noise. Aside from a girl yelling "I LOVE THIS SONG" when we did "Pink Pony Club" (you read that right), people were docile and zombie-like. At least clap once in a while, people!
I hope to do future gigs with this band when needed. They're all great people and musicians!
No gigs for a while until August 22 when I sit in with my buds in Supernova at Black River Barn.
And nobody will say we're too loud.
