let me preface this by saying there was, again, about 5 songs that really did it for me on 2023's softscars and the rest were pretty boring. obviously I like the album if a handful of songs are heavy hitters for me, but the rest were a swing and a miss. not that they weren't enjoyable, just didn't strike the right chord. not sure who those are for as I am adequately hipster enough to be the target audience for this type of thing, because I realllllyy wanna be pretentious enough to say this was a 10 for my pop rock enjoyers. songs I would recommend: title track, 1967, vv.

endless, nameless - living without (2023) [god i love the people that film concerts]

this release flew under almost everyone's radar including mine in terms of new math rock releases, and I'm not sure why. though the band doesn't have a lot of accolades, I had heard their name bouncing around in music spheres and decided to check out this release. (that may or may not be a lie, sometimes I think I heard things on the radio that never played there...) regardless, this album has been on rotation for me since I found it when looking up notable releases from years prior. as I've said before I prefer the harder more -core sounds when it comes to math rock, and I think this release fits that bill as it even leans into metal territory at times. this band creates elements of what I was seeking including dueted vocals and crashing percussion-- one of my favorite facets of the genre. this is one of the best noisy albums of the past 5 years, and I think that really says something. I'm still having fun spinning this. songs I would recommend: sarah lynn, a world so kind, perfection in your name.

erika de casier - lifetime (2025)
genre: alternative r&b, downtempo

initially I was not privy to Erika de Casier's swag, but this album was a grower for me. certain elements such as the chill r&b beats kept me coming back for seconds. this album really hits the spot if you are in search of that new type of beat coming out of scandinavia and other european countries, it really feels like they're doing something different that Americans haven't tapped into yet, with acts like dean blunt and those mentioned above. songs I would recommend: delusional, the chase, december.

chanel beads - your day will come (2024)
genre: hypnagogic pop, dream pop

rating: 8.5/10

I had to look up what genre this one was, because it doesn't fit succinctly into any categories I know of which is a funny quality for a "tiktok" artist to have. but I don't want to boil this release down to just where most people heard it. it has the instrumentation of post punk without the musicality, the choral vocals of hypnagogic pop without the instrumentation, and the sparse, dreamy production of dream pop without being especially poppy. I keep revisiting this one I think it will be a long standing favorite of at least the year. ended on a high note w00t! songs I would recommend: unifying thought, police scanner, urn, embarrassed dog.
