FNAF: Secret of the Mimic review! sort of :3

HIIIIII

Ok. so. Secret of the mimic just came out and ever since I saw the ending ive been, like, ICHING to talk about it. It couldddd be in my top 3?? But i'm not sure, there are so many games i feel like another one could take the cake lol. But I still really loved this game!! I just wanna share my thoughts since i don't think any of my other friends have finished it + the forums and groups here aren't uh…..that active (mainly the groups)

Ok! So first things first, i'm not going to go into too much detail here. Basically this will be better read after you've found out pretty much everything about the game! I'll be going over each section in the game (minus one, I believe) and just giving my thoughts on that, as well as my thoughts on every ending and my theories/ideas!

One last thing, I'm not here to argue about the new games. At all. If you don't like them, cool! I dont think I'll ever love these games as much as I love the og titles, but I still appreciate them and the story they're telling :> don't come here w/ any nostalgia bias.

With that be saidddd….

SPOILERS AHEAD!!! SERIOUSLY BIG FAT SPOILERS!!1 I'm gonna try to include images from each section so you've been warned !!!

☆*:.。.o(≧▽≦)o.。.:*☆

Section 1: welcome!!

What happens here:

  • You get assigned to the job

  • Watch the welcome show

  • Turn on the power and make it to the manager's office

  • Get chased by jackie

My thoughts:

Personally, i thought the intro was SUPER strong….until the song cut off lol. Like, the music was seriously great and set a really nice tone for everything so the abrupt end sort of sucked!! Also, i really like kellen goffs work in this. I was really surprised to know that was him since i've actually never heard him talk normally before :33

The whole intro show was very cute, i especially loved the callback to other fnaf characters that eventually end up existing in other games (which ill discuss laterrr heheheh). I was watching a friend play and I also like the mouse mechanic! But i also feel like it sort of makes things a little more difficult when you're being chased :,) the first “jumpscare” that happens with the tiger could have been executed better in my opinion, and i only say that because from what i saw literally no one knew they were even jumpscared lol. As for the body you see in the same room, I love the placement and I LOVEEEEE that your character actually reacts to it a bit!! Very very cool.

Moving onto the big jakie chase, i love this chase a lot! I love the way she barges into the room, she feels so mechanical and big and scary, and the way she throws the mail bot is funny, but it also reminds me of the way an animal might throw something, and i think that aspect is SUPER scary because when you think about it, the mimic is almost like an animal of sorts. Anyway, like I said, I love the way she moves throughout the chase and I love the way she taunts you. Literally the only thing I had a problem with (and this goes for the entire game really) is the music. And the jumpscare. Super lackluster. BUT MAINLY MUSIC!!!! The music is part of what makes a chase scary, so I feel like the music was better, louder, and all around just felt like you were getting chased by something that is going to kill you horribly, pretty much every chase in the game would be infinitely better. Oh, I also like the dialogue!! The dismissiveness of the guy directing you is really funny to me.

Section 2: big top! (oh oh guys its funny cus topping like in sex hshahahahahahash)

What happens here:

  • You make it to the lobby

  • You fix the elevator

  • You play games and puzzles in the bigtop showroom

  • You get chased by bigtop

My thoughts:

For the most part I thought this section was pretty cool!!. I love the look and feel of the whole facility, it feels properly retro (not properly in a British way i just mean like…like it looks accurate :,> ) the entire big top game section in general did feel a little….tedious?? Like, to have to do a game, finish it, make sure you don't get caught by the big top, make it to the ticket counter and then restart the whole thing with a puzzle just to do it again like 3 more times?? A bit much in my opinion, but I guess I don't really have any ideas for how to make it any better! I really like the way Bigtop breaks out of the ceiling out of view, I always love stuff like that. I also REALLY love the little ticket foreshadowing that they do (as in the little ticket that you see fluttering down on the roof section)!! It's so stubble but it's really effective. When I saw it happen I got super excited lol. Now the chase!! This chase is pretty cool! I like the way the Bigtop comes swinging on buildings and shit, super cool. Again the chase music isn't too great but it's better than jakies so i suppose it gets a point. I do also think the chase is a bit longer than it needed to be but other than that!! Cool section!! :33

Section 3: dollie!!

What happens here:

  • You get to the workshops

  • You build the springlock suit

  • Do The foxy stage play bit

  • Meet nurse dollie!

  • Collect trash for the shute

  • Get chased by a molten nurse dollie

My thoughts:

I'm going to be so honest, this was definitely my least favorite part of the entire game. At first I didn't think it was too bad?? But after playing all of this section out with a friend and becoming incredibly frustrated at how long and winded it was I can definitely say this was my least favorite bit.  It wasn't all bad, but I'll get my negative points out of the way! The direction of the entire section felt a little confusing, and this is coming from someone who, at the time of playing it with my friend, had watched someone completely finish the game around 3 times. We just had a really tough time figuring out where to go. Finding the parts for the endoskeleton bit was fine, and I guess the puzzles after that were fine too (though they felt sort of tedious as well) but the puppet show??????? The puppet show?????? Holy shit. Never again. I have no idea how the youtubers I watched were able to do it so quickly. It took my friend drying about 4 times, me switching and then dying about 5 times, and then her dying 3 or 4 more times for use to finish that section. The worst part was that the entire section would start over when you died, like it would straight up put you back to where it started. I just wish this part, at the very least, had an autosave function!!

The section after you meet nurse dollie is also long and winded with no direction, in my opinion. If I had not previously watched people play up to this section, I would have had no idea about the whole collecting trash bit. Also, the way the AI worked in this section made it more difficult to get around, but the game isn't supposed to be super easy so!! I digress.

Of course, my only other issue is the chase scene music. I will always hope for stronger chase music……other than all that!! I thought nurse dollie was really cute, and of course the dialogue works super well here :33

Section 4: the final stretch

What happens here:

  • You see ‘chica's party world’ chica

  • Loading bay puzzle

  • Make it to the admin wing

  • Gain executive clearance

  • Make it to edwins office

  • Escape tiger rock

  • Get back to the security office (the end of the game)

My thoughts:

I really really enjoy this section, mainly because it ups the scare factor a bit, but also because it goes by fairly fast! My friend and I haven't gotten to this part in her playthrough so this is subject to change of course lol, but for right now it doesn't feel terribly long. I didn't care for the loading bay puzzle but oh well, it wasn't terrible. I also think chica is really cute in this section, i loved her skates. Speaking of chica and chicas party world, I feel like this section in particular gives us some really good lore elements!! Like, slowly learning that edwins company was seriously going under, just how many employees were leaving and leaking information, etc. Of course I'll get more into those later but it felt worth mentioning :> now the riger rick section?? So good oml. They were able to bring in horror elements very well, and though i don't see tiger rock and something to be super scared of?? Having to avoid him in the dark and stuff still made for a pretty scary watch when I saw other people playing, especially cory. (sorry this section is so short, it goes by pretty fast and there's not much i have to complain about!!)

I will be getting into the ending here, all 3 of them, so if you haven't seen all of them PLEASE go see them for yourself!!! I won't go into too many gameplay specifics either as that would take way too much time! For this section I'll just go over the lore the endings have and what they imply in the first place, and the dialogue as I feel it's really the strongest part of these sections. Ok! Let's get into it!!!

Ending 1: Clock out

This is the ending you get if you give up the data receiver and decide to leave! It's revealed to you when you start driving home, though, that the entire time the person you were talking to wasn't dispatch at all, it was the mimic the entire time(specifically M1, i believe)!! You essentially get fired, and after adjusting your window you see something in the back. That “something” turns out to be the mimic (M2). it then attacks you, and that's the end!! The credits roll and reveal you on stage with the fnaf 1 animatronics (eehehehheeheheh)

Now i really liked this ending even when i thought it was the one true ending because the plot twist was really good to me!! I'll always recommend people get this ending first as it brings up so many questions that are answered in a really satisfying way once you get the second ending. It'll also leave room for any other ending you want to get, since when you load the game it should bring you right back to point (though i could be wrong about this). I also, really, really, really really really really loved loved LOVED the dialogue here. There were some people that tried to leave the room before giving up the driver, and the lines of dialogue that play as the door is locked on you??? So so good. It feels so unsettling too, like at that point you know you really shouldn't give it up but you can't think of another solution. The ending music is also great, not sure who came up with that track but they cooked, seriously. I like this ending a lot.

Ending 2: Unfinished business

Now this ending adds like 30-40 more minutes of gameplay so bare with me here. This is the ending you get if you don't give up the data driver and run the parachute.exe file on your computer. A little vent opens up to your left and you crawl through it to eventually get back to the lobby. From there, you play the goodbye show. A little button will come up from the floor and you'll start to go under when you press it. As you go down that tunnel system you start getting chased by Bit top, until eventually a door opens and you escape it. This door takes you to the R&D (Research & Development) floor. As soon as you enter the door you immediately see a giant freddy head (and not like some stylized freddy. Like, OG fnaf 1 freddy) that has a generator in it. The generator opens a door that leads to……the stage of the fnaf 1 location. No joke, you go out into what's going to become the original pizzeria from the very first game. This is the big fazbear project that Edwin has been referring to for the entire game. Anyay, you start the power and of course the mimic(m2) is in there. In order to get to the security room you have to drain power, and in order to do that you have to put on suits and put them by the camera and all this stuff. When you eventually do make it into the security room, you find M1, aka. F1ON4. She pretty much tells you to talk to Edwin and convince him to repair M2 in the old house. You take a ride to the old house where you learn just how in debt Edwin was before he….”cut off communications”. You make it up to his house and do more puzzle stuff. When you finish the puzzle you input a code into a door, which I'm guessing leads to the main office in his home. You can play a tape there that reveals Edwin, for the most part, was murdered by M2. anyway if you get on his computer you can open another door, put cradle.exe onto your data receiver. You then get chased by the mimic alllll the way to your van, when it looks like you're going to escape but the mimic leads to the crash your car and is able to get your data receiver from you. He then leaves you to die!! What fun!!

Ok. so so much to say about this ending. First of all, the dialogue. Oh. my. God. so good. The taunting as you make your way through vents and walls??? Some of my favorite lines in the game have come from that entire sequence. Call me embarrassing, i don't care, i thought that entire sequence was cool but unnerving at the same time. I loved it a lot. The og fnaf location popping up threw me off for maybe 2 seconds before I was able to put the pieces together and I just remember getting super excited. Liked. The way steel wool planned this out was very very smooth. The f1on4 reveal was also really good, and immediately puts together that her and the mimic chasing you are not the same (something you'd really only know beforehand if you were to play every tape). Though I didn't care for the fact that you had to do another puzzle, I loved getting to watch those tapes. It gives insight in a way that's not too on the nose, in my opinion. You can really put the pieces together just from those alone i think. The reveal that the mimic actually killed Edwin is also very cool. The mimic chase scene is fine, though it does feel a bit more like you're actually being chased compared to other scenes!! And then of course to learn that either way, you were going to die is pretty cool, in my opinion. It leaves room for the story to continue while also giving you a feel for the chaos that this thing has caused. Overall definitely my favorite ending, though the next one is a close 1st!

Ending 3: Moon.EXE

I love this ending alot as well, even though I know it's not canon at all. It's just very bittersweet in my opinion. You get this ending by getting every single collectable in the game and completing moon.EXE. you then play the game the exact same way up until you get to the house, where you can now get into some of the rooms with the glitched door readings. You go around collecting tapes and putting them into recorders. When you collect all the tape recordings, a vent will open, taking you to a child's bedroom. There's a stand with a book that has buttons on it, and a tapestry with a fix, a bunny, a chicken and an alligator. You then have to take your tiger rock collectible plush, put it on top of the stand, and press the buttons in the correct sequence in order to I guess revert the mimic, M2, to who they were originally supposed to mimic, which was david. The voices of Edwin and F1on4 then tell him to go to bed, tell him they love him, he says “i love you”, and either goes to sleep or completely shuts down.

Phew. this ending is like, so so bittersweet to me. I believe it's supposed to show what could have happened if Edwin was able to find an actual way to fix M2. it feels pretty hard hitting, to me at least, which is why it's my 2nd favorite ending out of the 3. And the moon.EXE game as a whole is very beautifully written in the way it tells its story. Edwin being the moon and Fiona being the sun (which just shows how far back sun and moon as characters really go), the little interactions you have with the enemies you've faced before you reach davids room, it's just very beautiful to me.

My theories/ideas!

Ok!! Now for the theory+idea portion!! I'm gonna be honest, I'm not really one to make theories since it takes me a while to really analyx media to its fullest. I can't, however, talk about the ones i dontcompletely agree with! And for now that's only one:

that David has anything to do with fnaf 4/that their bedrooms are similar: To be honest, the only reason I don't completely agree with this vision/theory is because it complicates things a bit too much for me. It doesn't make sense for something to be that planned out, is what I mean. I also just dont think steel wool would tamper with something that's been established for so long! If that makes sense lol. That's just me! Anyone can think and believe what they want of course :33

I do have some other ideas! But most of those relate to how this all fits into the timeline and how i think the story played out :33

Timeline: when i saw what steel wool was doing with having the fnaf 1 location in development by Ediwn, i won't lie, i was a little confused in terms of where it fell on the timeline, but i think i've figured it out! Sorta. As we all know, the fnaf 1 as a location is not what takes place after fredbears family dinner. The location that takes place after fredbears is the fnaf 2 location, which was established in 1987 (or 85 I'm not too sure which is right). That means it's established at least 6-8 years after the events of Secret of the Mimic, and 10-12 years after 1975 (which is just a date i found in game, but im guessing thats when the project was started or pushed). That's not even taking into account when the actual fnaf 1 location was established, which was at some point in the 90s. All this means that the entire location was just sort of sitting in this limbo for at least a decade before getting grabbed by Fazent again to be used in the future after the closing of the fnaf 2 location. I'm not saying it's not plausible or doesn't make sense, it definitely does! That's just an extremely long time and i wonder if it'll be touched upon in a DLC or future title :3

The story: ok, now i just want to write out what i think the story is so far based on what i know. Edwin Murray is the son of a man who is the owner of a costume manor, who plans on leaving the company to his name. At some point, he meets Fiona. His father dies, leaving the company to him. Either At some point after or before this a partnership/friendship is established with William Afton and Henry Emily, and they collaborate on ideas and projects. Since Edwin is set to take over the company, he starts to implement some of his ideas and projects, but he kicks production up into high gear, and his employees are starting to grow unhappy with how fast everything is going. At some point, Fiona gets into an accident during fall fest and dies, causing Edwin to create the first mimic program aka. M1 aka. F1ON4.

He keeps this a secret from everyone, but introduces her to david. I believe either during this time or sometime before is when Fazent comes to him with the Fazbear project. Projects are coming out with much complaint from customers and employees are getting angrier. David's 4th birthday rolls around and Edwin gifts him a playground, despite being warned multiple times by lawyers about the placement of said playground. David dies and M1 starts to miss who she thinks is her son, so she starts to encourage Edwin to create another minic program. He does, putting the new mimic program, M2, into the mimic endoskeleton M1 Previously occupied, and placing her in a super computer. Her computer is placed in the fnaf 1 location, which i'm going to assume was in the middle of being worked on at that time. I think it's at this point that William and Henry start to take a turn on Edwin.

They keep changing ideas on him, taking out Fiona's designs and replacing them with ones of their own. They're also starting to drain him of his employees, who begin leaking information to Fazent. I'd imagine that Edwin is on the brink of bankruptcy at this point. Because of this, they basically offer to take pretty much everything from him at a price. This includes the M1 and M2 programs, but he never gives those up. Eventually, with pretty much all of his employees gone and his company going under paired with M2, who's supposed to be David, not really being David, he lashes out at M2, breaking its legs and damaging it in the process. It takes this information, this rage, and learns it. With everything pretty much gone now, M2 ends up killing Edwin, cutting off communication between him and F1ON4. At this point Fazent owns all of his property and starts sending out employees to retrieve the M1 and M2 blueprints to….little success!!!

My theories/ideas!

I really love this game and its story. Overall?? I'd give this game a strong 8/10. I dont think ive felt this attached to the fnaf story and where it's heading since sister location (my favorite game in the entire franchise). This just feels like a story about loss and what it can do to a person, while also playing into the more shady parts of not just Fazbear Entertainment as a company, but William Afton as a person, which is always something I've wanted to explore personally. And the planning that steel wool had to do for this game is just incredible. It's funny to think that basically every character “created” by Fazbear Entertainment was basically stolen, lol!

Anyway, thanks for reading up to this point if you have!! I'd love to talk with literally anyone about the games, it's been running around my mind ever since i finished it lol. Also I apologize for anything I get wrong or any typos here!! I dont proof read :33 For anyone I'm friends with, my IM’s are open!! Alrighty! Bedtime!!!!

Toodles!
