I realized this is the perfect place to spew out my thoughts, so I'm blessing you all with my infinite knowledge of films and media (fair warning, I yap for quite a while in this one). you're welcome!!!
I've been told a lot that my opinions on the Minecraft movie (basically, I hate it and wish it was never made) are strange, that they're invalid because I haven't watched it (which would be fair enough if I hadn't been assaulted by it appearing all over my fyp), and that the film is "good because it's bad but funny". I knew that I had a good reason to hate it, but couldn't quite put my finger on it until today. It is such an obvious cash grab.
Movies of the 2000s and 2010s all seemed to have a level of passion behind them. The visuals were appealing, the soundtrack was appropriate for the subject matter and nice to listen to, the storyline was written by people who had expertise in the field and was entertaining to watch unfold. They would have a moral or a lesson and even when the purpose was just to entertain you'd often come home from the movie theater feeling like your time was well spent.
When it comes to the Minecraft movie (from what I have seen), the visuals are horrendous, the jokes have no structure or setup, and the storyline is unoriginal. And one may be thinking, "It's a movie about a video game, does it really have to be that serious?" First of all, if you were thinking that then I'm sorry but shame on you.
Second of all, let's talk about one of my favorite movies of all time; The Lego Movie. To compare, the visuals of The Lego Movie are undoubtedly stunning despite the simplistic design of the central characters, the voice actor for each figure is well-thought-out and makes sense, and the storyline - a seemingly average Lego figure is mistaken for a hero, and has to journey with a group of rebels to save his city from the evil mastermind trying to 'perfect' it - is simple, but well executed and makes sense in the context of the Lego world. The live-action aspects also make sense in this context, as the relationship between the father and his son is central to the plot - the son's imagination and use of the Lego set is in direct reference to his father. Just about every aspect of this film has been done right.
The Minecraft movie, however, uses a storyline seen trillions of times before - a group of people are sucked into a video game and must master the game in order to escape, with the help of a veteran. Does this not remind you of another (much better) movie Jack Black was in? Jumanji?
And on the note of Jack Black. I see no reason for him to have been cast as Steve in the first place. Don't get me wrong, I love the guy, but what about him exactly screams 'Steve'? I think someone like Pedro Pascal or Josh Hutcherson (I'm aware, painfully mainstream but I don't know a lot of actors) would have fit the role much better. it's fairly clear from this casting, as well as Jason Momoa, that the film was created for the sole purpose of making money.
Also, I'm not entirely sure what to take from the costuming of the film. Specifically with Jason Momoa's character. What is this supposed to convey? Why is he wearing a pink jacket with fringe? What is his character like? I've read that he's supposedly egotistical, but that is not represented by the clothing. The Lego Movie used costuming to show the personalities of each character upon first glance. Wyldstyle is a rebel, a delinquent shunned by society, Emmet is the most average man you could find, and the Spaceman (while being an existing figure already) is simple and loves space more than anything. It's clear from the get-go.
I know this was a long and kinda stupid rant for such a silly topic, but it honestly makes me sad to see how lifeless films have become and how much we have lowered our standards to the point where people genuinely believe that The Minecraft Movie is a good piece of film. I appreciate you sticking around until the end, though. I could talk about this for hours, but I'll stop myself here.
Bye!!!

I haven't seen this movie and don't want to anyway, but I totally understand what you mean about modern movies. For some reason, old movies even with some problems, every time I watch one im never disappointed; the story is engaging and all the actors are charismatic and often attactive. Recently with my family i re-watched pirates of the caribbean, and we were shocked to see how superior the whole trilogy was to recent blockbusters. We were invested every minute, it was both funny (not in the cringy forced way many movie display nowdays) and touching when it needed to. Even tv series for children have became shockingly mediocre, like Legend of Korra. Honestly im persuated that if movies and tv series in general have become so bad, it's because of nepotism. These untalented writers HAVE to be engaged only because of connections, cause i don't see why else by corporations will just choose bad writers for the fun of loosing money..

idk it's not like it's the only movie that released in the past 5 years.. like yeah ppl love slop for post irony brainrot nonesense but I don't see how one big budget film that follows a trend from all the time periods you mentioned makes you sick of movies?? The Lego Movie is one in a million from these corporations, NOT a commonality. If one film gets you to this point and you don't bother acknowledging anything else maybe you don't like movies that much..
Hi!!
I'm sorry for any confusion; allow me to clarify.
First of all, the Minecraft movie on its own did not inspire my distaste for modern film. It was a combination of multiple things, but I focused on the Minecraft movie because it specifically has disappointed me the most in recent months.
Secondly, The Lego Movie being a 'one in a million' is sort of what I'm critiquing here. The fact that corporations are spending millions of dollars on brainrot movies with unoriginal plotlines is the issue here. There's no love for the art, only greed.
Thirdly, you're right! I don't tend to sit and watch movies very often. But I can still identify a cash grab when I see one.
I apologize again if this came off as at all condescending or rude, just trying to make sure I'm making sense!!!

the moment I saw the first trailer for the Minecraft movie I was fuming with rage and hatred. the fact that the characters and choice of cgi made no sense guided that and I knew it was going to be a bad movie. when I watched it, I could see the appeal and it was laughable because it's like "how is this even a movie? who looked at this and thought it was going to be a good idea?" the basis of the entire thing was explaining basic Minecraft mechanics or mobs and saying corny Minecraft puns. there was no plot or character development or anything to make me care that they put a takeout death (that's what killed me) into the movie.
like im embarrassed for the movie production industry that this movie did so well and I can see a future where they will make more of these. with Disneys fallout and the rise of movies like Minecraft I think im going to stick with older movies.
im actually even more disappointed in the Minecraft community for enabling ts. like as corny and low quality Minecraft story mode was it legit was SO much better than the Minecraft movie, genuinely. companies don't take creativity and imagination seriously anymore. its proven by the newer kids shows/ cgi remakes, the Disney movies, the new memes, companies using ai for artwork, people using ai to write a Stories or make art. its disgusting guys I feel like im in a world where nothing is authentic anymore

I'm glad you agree as someone who's seen it (it would be quite embarrassing if this entire thing was just wrong, I spent so long writing it lol)! I have to agree with your point about companies not taking imagination seriously anymore. It's very sad to see. Maybe we can turn it around in the future, with more people with a genuine love for filmmaking in the industry than people seeking a comedically large pile of cash.

maybe. but with the popularity of ai in schools, businesses, and social media I don't think regular people will care about it anymore. creativity in society is actually slipping away from us and the only people who notice it are people in those creative communities.

it seems no genuine creative effort was invested in the minecraft movie likely because the creators were confident that the cultlike fanbase would consume anything associated with the brand it is a clear example of how consumerism exploits loyalty prioritizing profit over substance knowing that brand attachment guarantees viewership
This!!! So well put, thank you!! It's so tragic that the film industry has been reduced to just another way to make a quick buck rather than a creative outlet for producers to bring their stories to life. Truly disheartening.
