Recently, I've started using a laptop which shipped with Windows Vista for daily tasks, and I just wanted to share some tips and some essential software for using the OS in the present day (since it's objectively the best version of Windows). Hope y'all enjoy!
General stuff
- Despite lots of fearmongering by certain people, merely connecting an old version of Windows to the internet won't instantly get you hacked. if you practice common sense when downloading executables from the internet, this shouldn't be much of a concern.
- I'm assuming you're running a 64-bit version of Windows Vista with Service Pack 2 installed. Make sure you have this version.
Windows Update
While the Windows Update servers for Vista are still up, you can't actually download updates using the Control Panel applet in the OS. A workaround exists, and I highly recommend this video a good friend of mine made about how to go about installing it.
Web Browsers
Let's face it, most stuff we do nowadays is through a web browser. Problem is, most modern web browsers dropped support for Vista long ago, and you don't exactly want to be stuck with Internet Explorer.
Supermium
Supermium is a fork of Google Chromium that adds support for older versions of Windows, alongside various tweaks for performance and a more classic appearance.
r3dfox (Recommended for old hardware)
r3dfox is a fork of Firefox designed for use on Windows Vista, 7, and 8, and it adds various appearance and performance tweaks. Although it is based on Firefox which in terms of site compatibility is far behind the superior Chromium engine, it performs better on old hardware in my experience.
Extended Kernel
Now, there isn't really much more I really have to write about in terms of apps to install. You can usually go about using older versions of your favourite applications without much issue. But what if you really needed a piece of software that just isn't compatible with Vista? Well, that's where the Windows Vista Extended Kernel comes in. It allows you to install and run apps made for newer Windows versions on Vista! Installation is super straightforward, just follow the instructions on its website.
Well, that's about it! I know this was a bit short for a post of this nature, but I just wanted to share some stuff I figured out over the week or so I've been using Vista!
