living long enough

the following idea came from a list of prompts uploaded here:

"person a was struggling with a memory problem and so they try to write things they can remember about person b since person b died and they want to be able to remember them"

Once, with me on the sofa and he in the kitchen
I asked him about his vision

He told me the disorder was amblyopia
and he will be blind by the age of fifty.
With certainty I knew that it wasn't true,
and he would be blind by forty or so.

Tears welled in my eyes and I cried
to think he would live a life unsatisfied.

He held me and took my face in his hands
and said, grinning cheek to cheek,
"I'm remembering it. I'm memorizing it now"
And it must happen now, for if I die tomorrow -

No.

There is time, darling, for if we live that long
I want you to live satisfied and strong.

this is so moving, the way it captures the memory in love, like there is softness to the pain.
