if you genuinely think theres such thing as an "autism epidemic" we need to sit down and talk

REMINDER! i have asd myself and i have experienced this! this also was originally a bulletin

yes, it is true that there has been an increase in people assessed with autism. but some people act like it has come out of nowhere. its good that people are now seeing it in a different light, but some people still dont.

BUT! people use the term "autism epidemic" in a way that comes off ignorant and rude--at least in my eyes

its kind of weird?Β

i dont think you should call it an epidemic, since the dictionary definition for epidemic is "a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time."

now i know they dont mean it literally, as if autism is a virus or infectious thing, but some people do; trump, rfk jr, and multiple conservative politicians and people believe that autism is something to be cured.

i just feel like it comes off wrong when you call it an epidemic? (even if its not literal)

im glad some people are seeing it in a new light, but also some people arent

autism can be a disabilty, depending on the personΒ and their experiences and struggles. (i know some people dont think autism is a disablity but personally i believe it is, because i am disabled myself. if a disorder impacts your life daily, then yes, it can be considered a disablity.)

personally, i think its really rude and kind of invalidating for a neurotypical person or just a person in general to ask someone with autism why theres been an "autism epidemic".Β

ive had people in the past ask me this and honestly? its annoying.

its fine if you have good intentions, but i still think its rude any other way.

heres a reminder that autism is a developmental disorder, and not an epidemic or thing you suddenly have, even if its not literal (sometimes).

anyway idk i like using my stuff to talk about issues that are important to me,,,

please do research on autism even if you are neurotypical or dont have it. it really helps open your mind and understand what its like

I have ADHD and this shit is real as fuck. This is the type of thinking that prevented me from getting diagnosed until I was adult. My mother was abusive ableist scum and she genuinely thought Autism was a new thing people just made up for attention. When parents think like this it actively blocks children from essential medical assistance and causes long-term harm. I would know.

Sorry if that was too personal./gen

"autism pandemic" is the dumbest thing i've ever heard of; why do people act like it's the corona virus

UGH THIS and it's not even that "more people suddenly have it", people have always been neuro divergent, just in the past people didn't know what it was, and those who weren't able to mask were outcasts, labelled as eccentrics, or were sent to mental institutes??? Like you're making shit up. It's just that now, society is finally making it safe(r) for neurodivergents, and awareness has increased!!! Its that simple gang
