"I was gatekeeping __!"
This is also one of the things I dislike. Because first, music is meant to be shared, it brings people together. Centuries of stories and feelings has been transcripted (?) into music. Gatekeeping something or someone is restricting someone from discovering a new feeling, a warmth that has been missing or simply a joyful feeling. A song doesn't strictly one signification, it holds countless interpretations from people made by their past, their present and their future. It opens creativity, for everyone. Everyone can make songs. Anything you can't say or write, sing it, turn it into a melody. Music is made by the people for the people. Gatekeeping might be one of the worst things you can do to music. It doesn't even affect only the music itself, but also the artist. By keeping a song or an artist for you, you restrict them from growing a community, being heard. Even you, you'll feel alone, it's a competition against yourself. You want to share but you hold yourself from doing it. No one to talk with about it, no one to tell the joy it brings you. I think everyone feels that weird little fear of not being original, not wanting to let go. Including myself. And I think, seeing a a band or a singer you like getting more attention everyday slowly brings you to the next topic. To let other's know you've been here before, that you're supposedly better.
Am I the only one to be scared of telling someone I like a band or a singer?
Especially popular bands, I can already hear them coming, yelling "What do you even know about __?" ; "What do you mean your favorite song of theirs is in their top 5 most popular's?". Like, please let me enjoy music, I do not need to know the birth time of the singer or every single drama around them. Buddy, we like something in common, why do you have to make it a competition? Leave me alone, yes, I do not know the name of everyone in Radiohead1. What are you going to do about it? Nothing. And if that bothers you that much, just teach me about it, and we'll be both happy about it. And don't get me wrong, knowing little informations about things you enjoy is "normal" but making it a competition isn't. It just makes everything annoying. Plus, it's drawing a line between you and someone else, but we're all together for a reason.
I think that's all I wanted to talk about. It's my first ever entry and I don't hope any much of it2.
Have a great day or night, depending where and when are you reading this :) I'm open to any writing tips!
Verse of the day:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? ... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
1:(not sure of this phrasing, please correct me if some sentences of mine don't make sense)
2:(Again, not sure of this phrasing)
