Wechuge/Wendigo

The Wechuge more commonly known now as Wendigos are “native” creatures of the deep snowy pine forest of frost-wild. Wechuge were not born—they are made. They are the first golems ever to exist, sculpted from rotting flesh, bones, and blood by a tribe that named themselves the Wendigos. The cult of Wendigos worshiped the now nameless god of the cold, hunger, and dreams. According to old stories, their creation began when a young girl in the tribe had a dream—a vision of herself bleeding out atop a mountain of flesh and bone. The cult, believing dreams to be divine prophecy, acted on the vision. They snatched her up and bled her dry, enchanting her blood with a forgotten ritual called the Spell of the First Life. The spell demanded the blood of the “pure,” so each year, the tribe would sacrifice a young virgin girl to birth a new Wechuge. Up to twenty Wechuge were created before the tribe died. Plague and starvation whipping them out. The sickness was said to come from 3 things, being surrounded by the rotting flesh of the Wechuge, eating there own dead, and the souls of the murdered girls still attached to there Wechuge cursing them. With their masters gone, the Wechuge now wander the snowy woods at night, aimlessly following the routines they were born to serve—hunting, killing, and “eating” despite having no need to eat. They do not attack during the day and avoid harming the young or “pure” women, during the day they rest, some collapse covering their bodies I snow to rest, Some climb trees and fold their limbs in and hang themselves from branches, and others stand like statues unmoving. During the day, they are completely harmless and can be moved around. This has led to the creation of a profession known as “Wendigo Watchers”—individuals tasked with locating and relocating Wechuge away from settlements (They cannot be killed.). Despite being “soulless” golems, each Wechuge has a unique personality and a distinct hunting method for example, Elska buries herself beneath deep snow, erupting only when prey is directly above, Kaija stalks her victims in silence for hours before striking, Lumi mimics the sound of crying children to lure wanderers into the trees, and more. while each Wechuge looks different the do each share a few things, Rotting flesh fused with old bone, The clinking of joints as they move, White glowing dots deep in hollow sockets, and the disgusting smell of rot. each Wechuge is named which are Katla, Elska, Kaija, Siv, Thora, Freydis, Inga, Runa, Ylva, Lumi, Maja, Saga, Ilva, Nadja, Solveig, Eira, Anja, Tove, Yrsa, Signe. while feared, the Wechuge are also very respected, locals often leave offerings for them: bundles of dried flowers, sweet herbs, or braids. When a Wechuge is moved, care and gentleness are essential. tips given by locals are, Stay indoors after nightfall and out of the woods, Keep bright flames burning throughout the night, and DO NOT mock or speak ill of the Wendigo girls.
FUN FACT

1. In some villages, Wechuge are honored in festivals. Dancers wear masks of bone and bark, and just dance and act as a narrator tells a story.

1. the girls chosen were no older then 15

1. girls chosen would have there bodies painted with chalk to lighten there skin, with bright red makeup on cheeks and lips to symbolize childlike innocence

1. Girls chosen would have there hair washed everyday and be forced to wear a pure white dress and blindfolds

1. the preparation took a total of 11 days to complete before the kill

1. on the day of death the girl would be dragged on a sled and placed on top of the rotting flesh and bones and animals alike they would then be cut slowly and left to bleed out.

1. the girls could stay alive for hours after the cut or even days

1. The blood had to pour, not pump. The spell required slow release, a river, not a storm

1. Wendigo Watchers stay silent near Wechuge, fearing loud noises might angry them

1. if a Wechuge is left in a warm place for a long time the soul within the Wechuge would wake-up and say her name

1. they can sense purity and can smell your sins

1. they have the ability to track blood
