Troll Hunter (2010) – Giant Trolls, Forest Vibes, and a Little Too Much Walking

Alright spooky friends of Gore&More, today I’m reviewing a film that was hyped up to me like it was the holy grail of Norwegian horror. And honestly? It kinda delivered — but also kinda made me check my phone a few times. Let's dive in.

🎥 The Film

Troll Hunter is a Norwegian mockumentary/found footage movie where a group of students follows a weird, grumpy man through the woods… who turns out to be a legit troll hunter.
Yes, trolls. Giant, snorting, sunlight-sensitive forest beasts that look like fairy tale creatures that gave up on skincare.

🌲 What I Liked:

  • The Scandinavian aesthetic: misty forests, damp everything, total cryptid-core.

  • The trolls: Big, weird, and honestly kind of adorable in a “please don’t crush me” way. One of them looked like my father before coffee.

  • The hunter: Imagine a grumpy grandpa who’s also the world’s leading expert in monster extermination.

  • That serious documentary tone for such an unhinged subject? Chef’s kiss.

😴 What made me check Instagram mid-scene:

  • Some scenes dragged on... and on... and on.
Like: “Yes, you’re walking through the woods. For the fifth minute straight. WHERE'S THE TROLL??”

  • At times it felt more actual documentary than horror/fantasy, which is cool… if you’re fully awake.

🎯 Frankie's Final Thoughts

A cool, creative film with fun lore and a National Geographic-meets-creature-feature vibe.
Not exactly high-octane horror, but it has charm — especially if you like your monsters with a side of Nordic myth and slow pacing.

📼 Mood: “Now I’m afraid of moss”

🧃 Score: 7 UV light blasts out of 10

💬 Have you seen Troll Hunter? Did you get a little sleepy halfway too or is that just my slasher-addled attention span?

Stay spooky and troll-free —

"now im afraid of moss" love that LOL!! and the UV blast rating x3 great little review and mostly agree with it! a few parts really did drag on but i do have to wonder, with people who have more knowledge of norwegian culture and language beyond just the surface, do some scenery/landmarks/conversations etc have more meaning that catch their attention? any norwegians who have seen the film want to weigh in on that?

although i have found that rewatching it and really paying attention to the dialogue kind of connects more dots in your mind wrt the plot and overarching Theme which is Government Trying To Hide Things = Bad and Government Wasting Money On A Bandaid Solution When It Comes To A Public Health And Safety Crisis = Bad and The Working Man Deserves More Power Than He Has and broadly, Destroying Entire Species And Populations For Human Convenience/Capital Is Wrong

i love the ending because it leaves me wanting more and wanting to know what happened to each of the characters, and i love the credits scene because its soooo apt. idk how else to describe it

im glad you took the time to watch one of my fave movies (not because i think its like totally profound and the best movie ever but i just think its cool and fun and interesting and at times it is kind of profound ngl. Really Makes Ya Think) and that you enjoyed it ^_^

And yeah, I completely agree — there’s a LOT under the surface here if you’re paying attention (and like you said, especially on rewatch). I think i will have to rewatch it to fully understand the dialogues cuz i had to see it in Norwegian with subtitles, and I have the attention spawn of a goldfish
