Here to yap about Dazai
Jesus I cannot fathom how people don't like him, or at the very least respect his character. He's such a complex character that people I see have a tendency to dehumanize him or oversimplify his character.
Dazai is so genuinely interesting for me to analyze. But it bothers me when people call him a "Wolf in sheep's clothing"
1) Humans are far more complex then simple "Prey" and "Predator" roles
2) Dazai is not even close to pretending to be nice to hurt others. His whole goal is to achieve what Odasaku said, while masking himself in a "Goofy, sewerslidal, unserious" detective to be seen as a normal person rather than a Mafia Executive. He's doing it successfully. His whole plan is working.
3) He's just. Not. A wolf in sheep's clothing implies pretending to be innocent to attack others. Dazai's masking as a unserious detective to isolate himself from the ADA. They see him as nothing more then a crazy colleague rather then a deadly, monstrous mafia executive. His only "real" friends were Ango and Oda.
It's why Dazai masks himself with his whole mask. It's because he's terrified of losing control. He say's that pretty clearly.
it just..bothers me when people act as if he is not a changed man. He genuinely is trying.
People forget he's only 22. His brain isn't even fully developed yet and he's had SO much experience in death and depression. He is ONLY 22. And was 13/14 when joining THE MAFIA.
He's just a broken man trying his best to become better. Even if he's flirty, ignorant, narcissistic--it's all apart of his mask to appear nearly unapproachable.
Please understand lol I did NOT mean to yap so damn much T-T

If there was a jail for bsd fans specifically, trying to box dazai into either good or bad should've been the highest possible charge. No way people seriously see him as a wolf in sheep's clothing. Oda said it loud and clear, things like good or bad don't matter to dazai, such concepts are blurry to him. He's literally THE morally gray™. A person lost in the pursuit of a way to fill a bottomless hollow. A hurt soul in search of healing. Speaking of which, part of why oda is one of my favourite characters is him guiding dazai towards a healthier environment and helping him regain a bit of touch with his sense of humanity.
I KNOW RIGHT? Also, the trademark on THE morally grey is sending me.
But it just annoys me to levels I can't imagine. Dazai's not the best person, but he's also not the worst. So, you can't shove him into simple "good" and "bad" roles. Similarly, you can't shove him into "Prey" or "Predator" either. People misunderstand his character so much it just makes my blood boil.
