i know i'm going to look either conservative or too woke, but that album cover is not the it girl vibe she was trying to give. i mean, girl get up?
i saw some fans say that it was meant to be satire, but even if that was the goal it's not effective.
i
don't think men will look at an album named "man's best friend", with
the picture of a woman on her knees with her hair getting pulled by a
man and say "woah what a great and effective critic of women's place in
society" or something
and this especially since it's made by sabrina carpenter. don't get me wrong, i have nothing against her being freaked out, you go girl hell yeah assume your sexual life and everything. but if she wanted to make something satire i think she would need to make it more obvious, her whole branding is talking about her sexual life (not everything, but short n' sweet isn't really about sunshines and rainbows), an album like that will just look like some kink and not an ironic reference to... domestice violence? some men's violent views on sex? porn promoting women abuse? submission/domination dynamics between men and women? i don't even know how her marketing team is going to rectify that one.
"with everything that's going on in the world, that's the war you chose?" yes it is! because promoting being man-handled to teenage girl is weird!!! with of being promoted to young girls, we don't need mainstream popstars doing shit like that!!

also i want to clarify that in no way i am criticizing sabrina's music or behaviour, i'm not falling for the purity culture comeback, i just think that a woman associating herself to literal dogs is weird!

about this whole “satire” thing — if it was megan thee stallion or cardi b or nicki minaj or lizzo or sza or literally any woman that isn’t short, white, pretty ’nd thin in sabrina carpenter’s place, the reaction to the album would NOT be what it is now.
if anyone is interested, brownfireball makes a really good point about this in her video “The girlypops are gaslighting us all the way back to the 1960’s” which also covers sydney sweedney’s bathwater thing and general ideas about feminism in between. https://youtu.be/7QHaKTCeNEE?list=LL for those of you on a computer. if you don’t want to deal with youtube, go through duckduckgo (theres a mode where you can watch it without ads) or through musi (ad-free app/site).
i honestly don't know. i don't listen to the artists you mentioned but i don't think either of them are involved enough politically to carry the "satire" thing either. and tbh even if it was satire, i don't think that type of picture along with "man's best friend" is satire enough to get any point across.
and thanks for the recs! i will definitely be watching it!

i get what you mean but i think its also with their attitudes. sabrina always tries to be quirky and cute, but megan is also quirky right? its just in the attitude, its also because i feel like sabrina is branding her music through her looks and through sexual tendencies, i feel like megan has too much pride to act all quirky and do different poses for a large audience where there are teens considering her age, i'm not saying sabrina has no pride at all i just feel like she wouldnt. as for cardi she comes from a hard background and in fact did workk as a stripper but she climbed up the ladder and got to where she is today, it seems a bit admirable yk? like as a closer example i think they probably all twerk one way or another in their concerts, so lets compare them to ice spice, the difference between ice and cardi and megan is that ice branded herself with her body. of course i havent rlly looked into cardi and megans concerts i lean more to the opposite genres so im not as educated, i'm open to listening to what you know though!

honestly shes turning into a second ice spice, ice spice branded her music with her twerking and when she got thin and wanted to reverse it it didnt work out. sabrina is just setting herself up for a looonnngggg road of sexualizing. i used to like her and knew her from girl meets world but i personally cant stand seeing another girl or now woman do this to herself and pull us along with her. and did you see her album with the lolita references? her work makes me ill. i always support women and i know she makes a living out of this but i draw a clear line between whats good and bad for women all over. i saw a post comparing her album to the sydney sweeny soap thing. sabrinas target audience (from my pov) might just be horny guys because some things just dont make sense, like her met gala outfit, i know she didnt design it but i just think her outfit didnt need to have the length of a bathing suit, i know i sound like an old conservative woman but this is coming from a teen, it really hurts to see someone support the shitty mindsets that are corrupting our generations ansd the ones to come. make america great again? pass. make music artistic again! stop selling music through your looks and branding it with your body, even if she did make good music (theres no such thing as good music its all selective based on a persons preferences) by branding herself with her body shes taking away her artistic value. sometimes going against norms isnt always a form of protest especially when it supports toxic propaganda.

THIS!! also ive been saying sabrina fans saying that ppl shouldn't be concerned cuz sabrina's an adult and she's not promoting her image/content to young girls buuutttt that really isn't what i'm seeing 3 also just comparing herself to a dog is concerning to say the least ???
i don't think we can blame her if young girls are listening to her music, she's free to make songs about anything and she doesn't have to censor herself because of her fandom.
however that album cover and the way she compares herself to a dog is really weird, and that shouldn't be promoted to anyone.

I know it's her whole thing to write overly sexual songs, but I agree with what you said on the album cover. Also there was that really weird photoshoot that referenced Lolita, and I remember Sabrina herself saying on that she didn’t get inspiration from the movie because she never watched it? Which is really ignorant imo; I think it's common sense that everyone should know what Lolita is about. Also she could have just chosen the option to stay silent about it, but her comment just makes things more suspicious.
Oh an not to mention the song Juno, which Sabrina herself also said in an interview that it was a reference to the movie Juno. So she's literally romanticising teenage pregnancy....
i agree. also she had a whole team behind that photoshoot, you're telling me not one of them made the connection?

I'd say that having the aesthetics of this album cover can truly only work in a community where most of the fanbase acknowledges the pressing issues of femininity, the patriarchy, etc.
If a punk rock band that was made up of femmes made an album with THAT as the album cover, no one would bat an eye because undoubtedly, most of the fans would be leftists. Sabrina Carpenter being a mainstream pop artist and showing this aesthetic only causes harm especially with the huge uptick in conservatism in recent years. Very disappointing
EXACTLY, her fans keep saying it's satire but her music (and her fans) lack the political radicality for it to have any kind of impact.

LITERALLY EXACTLY WHAT I WAS THINKING !! like, im not surprised by sabrina doing an album cover like that, because of her music. her brand doesnt feel like she's empowering herself or sexually liberating herself, but she's just constantly letting men treat her poorly? not to victim blame, but she does pick who she surrounds herself with. manchild as a song is so telling of that
i don't really know about her relationships but i kind of agree with you!

You wrote exactly what i think.
it's great to see people who agree with this point of view!

If she had been alone in the photo without a man you wouldn’t have had problems

idk with the name of the album she still would have been comparing herself to a dog. so even without a man it would stay weird.

i respect that, and i know what you mean! i get she's trying to be like madonna when she uses religion and sexuality for shock value, but i'm worried by how many former child actors ended up sexualizing themselves later in their careers, it seems to be a really concerning pattern.
i honestly don't know how to feel about the cover itself, it's just not my taste but i can't find a reason to be full-on offended by it like how some people on the internet seem to be. i wonder how society will look back on it in 20 years.
probably badly, especially with the lolita photoshoot she did which is also weird af
