"She opened up her apartment door to hundreds of roses. She knew they were from him; he had found her."
Her blood ran cold as she heard the quiet shuffling of someone stirring within her home. Frozen in fear she couldn't move, petrified in place unsure of how to get out of there. A familiar voice called from within her head, "You need to walk backwards out of this apartment right now, Peyton."
Following the command she did as she was told and once free from the entrance of her apartment she was able to think somewhat cognitively again. She knew she needed to get out of there before he came looking for her as it was inevitable to not hear her enter the apartment. She crept down the hallway reaching the emergency door. As quietly as she could, she pushed the door to the stairwell open, easing it shut behind her, silently begging for this to be the one night it doesn't screech from the rust built up along the frame.
Once shut, she bolted down the stairs as fast as her feet could carry her. Digging into her purse she found her phone and with trembling fingers dialed 9-1-1. As the voice of the operator came over the phone she heard the bang from the upper stair well door swing open and feet began pounding down the steps descending rapidly to her location. Her palms grew slick with sweat as she tried to pick up the pace, praying she wouldn't fall. The footsteps behind her began to get too close, attempting to throw him off she quickly opened the second floor door and banged it shut. The sound reverberating through the stairwell masked her footsteps for a mere moment and she took off back down the stairs again. Moments later she heard the sound of that door opening up and shutting but knew better than to pause even a moment. She needed to get out of this stair well to the city street where there was bound to be at least one person that could help her. As she got to the landing she flung open the door that led out to the street relief washing over her when she saw other people out there and suddenly remembered she still had the operator on the line. She put the phone to her ear and breathily told the operator her location and name, begging for them to hurry because He was after her.
