a brief history of orb pondering

whether you're an established wizard looking to expand your knowledge of crystallomancy and orb pondering, a novice mage with modest divination experience, or even a lowly cleric taking your first steps towards cosmic enlightenment, this is the blog for you!!  so what is an orb and how exactly does one ponder it?

what you need to know first is that orb pondering has been around a long, long time.  one of the very first known instances of orbs being pondered takes place in 5th century ad, when scrying was widespread among the old roman empire. 

this was back when christianity was a brand new concept, a very marketable one and anything which threatened it (i.e. pagan druid wizardy) was regarded as heretical nonsense.  no, you couldn't just openly ponder orbs back then.  far too dangerous.  so pagan people oft convened in private, pondering orbs well outside of the empire's tyrannical scrutiny.

despite the roman empire's attempts to stifle the forbidden magicks, the pagan practices soon spread throughout the annals of history.  soon a lot of people were finding out that they too could ponder their orb.  so popular was orb pondering that it became a staple in later cultures, notably romani travellers who inadvertently lent their pondering of orbs to early british culture.  queen elizabeth i, the last ruling monarch of the tudor dynasty, often consulted with john dee, a noted clairvoyant and astrologer who would perform deep pondering of orbs at her royal behest.

later during victorian england, the cobbled streets of london were soon engulfed with scam merchants, their magical tonics and elixirs, and their too-good-to-be-true orb pondering that took place in circus tents, horse drawn carriage or private quarters.  it was a good racket for many, with orb pondering now cheapened from its humble beginnings to a highly profitable service aimed at posh upper class gentry wishing to know whether he will procure a wench that evening or not.
