So just to do a little clarification for those who don’t have an idea of who Addison Rae is. She’s a small town southern from Lafayette, Louisiana which happens to be where I’m from so, and basically in 2020 she posted to the platform TikTok when it was still fairly new and blew up on platform and would move to LA to pursue content creation. And every now and then she would have memes blow up about her. And in 2021 she would drop her debut song Obsessed which was a commercial failure to say the least the public hated everything about the song and this song was supposed to be a single on her original scrapped debut album AR but that quickly fell through when it got leaked to the public the entire track list and so she scrapped it and only released 4 songs off that scrapped project and one of the songs 2 die 4 featuring Charli XCX in which would lead her into making another collaboration with Charli and becoming a close friend of hers. And she got featured on the Von Dutch remix for Charli’s Brat album. And at this time this was the very start of Addison Branching out.
So in August of 2024 she drops her first single since Obsessed titled Diet Pepsi originally titled Backseat but was changed after a suggestion from Charli saying that Diet Pepsi was a cooler name and after this was dropped she was a whole new person. People online were taking it well even comparing it to previous works saying it was a rebrand and improvement. So next she drops Aquamarine as her next single and also the remix with Arca titled Arcamarine. Then she drops High Fashion and Headphones on. Then fame is a gun and times like these. Her album Addison drops on June 6th with a twist by her saying that this is her first and last album as Addison Rae saying she’s dropping her surname because it’s just Addison now.
Ok let’s get into it. The textbook definition of Propaganda in terms of musicality is in the context of music, propaganda refers to the use of musical works to intentionally shape perceptions, manipulate emotions, and influence behavior to support a particular ideology or cause or possibly views. I don’t think her music is propaganda whatsoever and if it is then I believe it used a marketing tactic to promote the mainstream rise of dreamy baroque pop that was popularized by artists such as Lana Del Rey and honestly the pure feeling of being in your 20s. Her album was a 10/10 for me no skips because it was something fresh and new compared to other releases, it felt like I was listening to her. But if you asked me if you think that her persona is alluring and genuine I’d say fifty fifty because naturally Addison does have that it factor that star quality that draws you to her in a sense of charm but it seems almost ingenious as her personality is fragments of people around her and it’s almost like she’s taken her own take based off their distinctive personalities and styles. For example, her best friend Lexee is Addison before she came into this you can tell that Addison takes a lot of inspiration from her aesthetic and overall style. It’s unique and distinctive to her. It’s a case in which you can’t outdo the doer. I believe it’s just personal preference when listening to her music because you like what you like despite what others say about it
Now is she our generation’s Britney Spears? I think Britney respectfully is another level compared to Addison who is just starting. They are two different artists with completely two different styles and personalities and of course artistry and musicality. Respectfully there will never be another Britney Spears as there will never be another Addison Rae because every artist has their distinctive and unique style and if you ask me Addison hasn’t found hers yet but that’s great because she’s young and fresh to the industry and has plenty of time to find her sound and to make a impact.
