Smelly Tudors?

Tudors smelled bad?

King Henry VIII was very fond of bathing. He thought the foulness of body oder to be repugnant. Tudor's did have ideas about bathing, but stayed away from main "fresh" water sources such as the Thames. There was little understanding about how human and animal waste could affect main water sources. They did understand that the water was contaminated, but without a understanding of germs, they didn't fully understand why.
Many Tudors believed in "miasmas". Miasmas is the belief that bad air could enter the body and cause disease. This lead to a fear of warm water, and even drove some lower class Tudors to turn to a dry bathing method.
According to historian Ruth Goodman, many sources discuss people using clean and dry linen cloths to clean themselves. This was achieved through using the linen to rub on the body so vigorously the skin would turn red from the effort.
So it raises the question...did they smell?
Ruth Goodman lived using Tudor hygiene practices for a year and only dry bathed during this time. She claimed the cloth was able to keep her body clean and prevent smell. Even claimed her coworkers (who were unaware of the project) didn't notice anything different about her. What do you think?
