Eulogy for the Hounds

I thought I saw you in a crowd once before, but it quickly became a distant memory

Something hypnagogic, like the dream it was when you came to me

Frail and shaking, so full of excitement and lust for life

A tonic to cure my gutted heart and shaded soul

And you waved then danced, and smiled so hard

I knew you were scared, but I promised to keep holding your hand

You coughed on me, your smile dimmed, but I would fight for you. I would make sure you were okay, that you would get a long, book-worthy life

The next morning -  right when I plucked the petal off a lily by mistake - you had died

Died without getting to live, journeyed without having gone anywhere

A single glance at where you had lived, and forty minutes of talking to them. So much promise, and that ended it all

I saw that bright look on your face just for a minute, but my heart was stabbed when she knew it was gone

There’s someone I can see outside, a lesser light from the same place, whose face is so dreadfully close to yours

I don’t know if I should chase after them, and hope one day they’ll turn around and it will be you again

My heart can’t tell if she’d be able to look in your eyes, if it's wise to try - getting to know them just for you

My soul can’t tell if she could ever fit someone as well as she would’ve fit you. If you were the one shining miracle that could have made her feel okay.
