TL;DR at end!!
I always hear people say that ShadowVanilla is a darkship or a proship, and I simply don't agree. I'm doing my best to keep this purely factual, keeping opinions, feelings, and misinformation out of the mix. Forgive me if any of those things happens to appear. For the sake of time, I'm abbreviating names.
PV = Pure Vanilla
SM = Shadow Milk
BS = Black Sapphire
CA = Candy Apple
TR = Truthless Recluse
HB = Hollyberry
DC = Dark Cacao
GC = Golden Cheese
Okay so YES, I KNOW SM WAS REALLY ABUSIVE TO PV FOR MOST OF THE CHAPTER, BUT IT'S A VERY INTERESTING SHIP DYNAMIC. So, putting aside the abuse, SM and PV are a good duo, because they're two sides of the same coin, meaning they understand each other better than anyone else. SM is lonely and doesn't want to confront that. PV has felt that way and tries to help SM confront that.
You ALL saw how happy SM was whenever PV got corrupted. He didn't care about the Soul Jam anymore; he cared about having a companion. Someone who understood him. A partner in crime, so to speak. Even before PV got corrupted, everyone noticed how different SM acted around PV, especially BS and CA, quote from CA, "He's acting weird...er than usual!". They noticed he seemed to like PV more. CA also says that SM was happy when they were playing chess, though take this with a grain of salt as I'm unsure if it was CA and SM playing or PV and SM playing.
When PV offers to be SM's friend, you can see he wants to accept. He wants to be PV's friend. He doesn't want to be lonely anymore. (i.e. "Friend..?") But accepting PV's offer means being vulnerable, and he can't let others see him as vulnerable. He can't let himself be vulnerable. So instead, he declines, taking the offer as an attack.
And of course, we all know that SM is a liar, and so whenever SM says he's just after the Soul Jam, there's a good chance he's lying, as he appears to enjoy PV's presence, even going so far as to refer to PV as his 'favorite,' once even referring to him as 'Silly Vanilly'. If I recall what animation I'm talking about, the animation when PV is turned into TR, there's a moment where you can briefly see something on SM's face. Regret? Guilt? Whatever the case may be, it's clearly there, implying he feels slightly bad for turning PV into TR.
Now, finally, analyzing the animation below. In all animations similar to this one, the particular ancient looks distressed in some way about the presence of their beast form, DC and GC being frustrated, HB being worried(?), and PV being... just, calm. He so far is the only one standing out, not being bothered in the slightest. Also, notice how rather instead of looking at PV's Soul Jam, SM looks at PV's eyes.
If you took the time to read all of this, thank you! It means a lot to me. But if you didn't, here's a TL;DR
Basically since SM and PV are similar people that just took different paths in life, they have good chemistry despite the bad things that SM has done.
