yup!!, that's it.
i've finally decided to make a tiny RE4 style game!!
because why not?. it's an awesome game!!!. and it's pretty fun to make stuff!. (also teehee, it kinda helps me build a nice portiofolio)
and ugh, i don't wanna talk about how awesome RE4 is, because everyone knows it's awesome!. but i still gotta talk about a few things that no one talks about!. this game is absolutely beautiful!!!.
it looks fantastic!. the art-design still holds up pretty great!. and they did all of that on a console that can't even do some dynamic lighting every modern dev's used to!!
Look at that!!. the left side is "shaded" and the right side is "unshaded". and yeahh, there's shadow on the left-side. but it's actually a 3D model that was manually placed in!.
but other than that, it's pretty awesome. there isn't a lot of lighting we have now!, and it's pretty easy to forget that when they made such awesome environment that used some clever tricks to fake lighting!!!.
aww, i don't wanna bore people explaining how they did that!.
but yeah!!, i soon started to get to work!. and tried to replicate that!!.
and I kinda did!!!.
before:
After:
and hmm!!, okie is not visually pleasing yet because i still got work to do!. but you can feel the difference!!!.
okie, though i kinda cheated a bit and used a biiiit of lighting because duh!, i cant manually make all the shadows!. and yeah, in the OG RE4, they still used a bit of baked lighting for some bits!. like for the lamps near the castle's entry!. but other than that, it's all pure albedo!. wiith a tiny bit of fake shadow by some dot-product stuff. and aww, gotta make some special shader for the player later!!!. something that's not influenced by the shadow and is always unlit!.
and oh well. i better add in some things later after im done with the core-gameplay.
and hmm!, for the gameplay... oh well!. i thought i'll add in some nice procedural animation stuff. because duh!!. for a game like RE4 where the cursor is pretty dependant on the current animation of the player-character!!. and oh well. tbh, doing that was kinda easy i guess?.
hehe, im kinda using unreal so i can easily use some fancy "Control rig" to do that!, awe, it's truly awesome!. no wonder studios want their hands on unreal engine!. it is quite friendly for both designers and programmers while being powerful!!.
though aww, i think i'll also look into some more manual approach for that because i feel like it's nice to have an extra bit of control!! (plus it sounds fun!) and aww, maybe i feel like it's nice to get the hands right while aiming!. (okie that giant square is a crosshair for testing, and aww, sorry i can't upload a gif!. buuuuut, currently instead of just moving the hand, the whole spine gets moved around while aiming!!. which don't look bad at all, buuuuuuut i've challenged myself to get the hand moving!. so imma not give up!, aww even if i have to make a new rig!!!)
and hmm, speaking of rig, oh well!. i made a tiny rig!. i guess currently it works as a nice placeholder!!!. it still don't have any fingers or even a wrist bone!. but yeah!, it's basically a less-detailed rig of the final rig!, sooo it should work perfectly for prototyping purposes i guess. tho hehe, i kinda textured the head!!. just to see if i could!. and i guess it went okie!. tho aww, i still haven't figured out how to make the hair part yet! yikes, i still suck at 3d modelling
and ugh yeah, i kinda used godot for a bit. but the fbx importer is absolutely garbage, so bad that it's literally unusable. it imports everything incorrectly. animation don't work right. so i got pissed off and switched to unreal. awe, i guess i could've used gltf!!. but it would make my current workflow messy.
and hmm!!, i guess i could talk a bit more about the stuff on programming side, but it's too meh!!. so hmm. aww, idk really!!.
i think i'll finally get the whole movement, camera, and shooting part working right!. anddd, make some basic enemies!. and after that, it'll be time for polish!.
