tl;dr incoming :o
i'm still fairly new here so bear with me but i have a whole pile of ideas and such which hopefully could get implemented server side to generate substantial organic growth to spacehey as a community
the first item up for discussion concerns forums and groups, and the sheer lack of user activity with both of them, despite them both being core aspects of what would keep any online community thriving. see, when you create a new forum post, or start a new thread in a group, literally NOBODY will see them. not unless you go to the page, as new post notifications are not a thing on spacehey
so here's the proposal - enable notifications for new posts
that one little thing = exponential site growth
honestly it's a no brainer and i'm genuinely curious why this hasn't even been implemented to begin with. in the meantime, there is a viable workaround that i found using rss - i covered this in more depth over at my group frens - just go here to read it xoxo
secondly, wouldn't it be great if we were able to have this advanced search feature that's been in development since heck knows when to finally come to light? in addition, wouldn't it be great if we were able to mass edit stuff, including friends and blah blah blah? it really would be cool, wouldn't it? so yeah, there's that too and i hope that also can become an actual thing.
finally, i always see posts about how spacehey is dead, that there's no reason to continue using it, that it's not popular and blah blah blah blah blah blah blah
the fact is that any online community is what YOU make it. sitting there and whining does nothing to affect the status quo. just like tyler durden said in fight club, "you decide your own level of involvement".
you want things to change? then make your views heard. you want the site to be more active? then be active yourself. these are very simple precepts which at a grassroots level, count for absolutely everything.

I enjoy contributing to the dead site allegations. I just don't like socializing in general and I hate messaging people. I'm only here because I like the customization, no I refuse to move anywhere else because I'm too stupid to figure out how neocities works.

Some people just want to personalize their profile to be aesthetic, but they don't want to interact or send messages. These people certainly didn't use MySpace, or they wouldn't even survive the chat rooms of the 2000s.

i agree !!!!! if we want change, WE GOTSTA BE DA CHANGE!!! but most importantly the idea of notifications cant be said enough! i luv our little happy community, the more active the merrier! i think we hve a steady member count on spacehey tbhhh but ppl being online is def a plus!

yeah i agree with everything. i get the point of spacehey is to feel like an old website, but it does not need to navigate like on entirely. it really sucks having to do certain things like removing inactive friends one by one yknow

There is another way to get group notifications as well. I made a script awhile back that basically lets you "follow" threads. You have to get the notifications from the main Forum page instead of the homepage, but it does work. And it does a few other nifty things as well.

I would love to see a search engine to find locals near you like we used to have on MySpace which is actually what made it fun for the users. Facebook got their inspiration from MySpace, but was only meant for college students before it became open to the community during MySpace’s dramatic change when they sold out and took away the css/html customization options. Facebook for a minute had these same features, but ditched it for the minimalist culture which pretty much took off in an instant and sucked the soul out of everything—SpaceHey is the closest physical form of the past I’ll ever get to being who I was back then and the best way for those who never had the chance to experience MySpace in its prime back in the middle to late 2000s.
Now that's interesting!! It would be a curious feature, to know who other people, near you, surface here 7w7

Hot take, I think that notifications should occur as a sort of cumulative thing once every 24 hours rather than immediately pushed. Social media pushing notifications ASAP, I feel, feeds into the addiction culture of the bigger platforms.

I do agree the forums and groups should be pushed more, and im sure MySpace had its own ways of keeping them active. I just wish more original MySpace users would talk about this stuff or at least remember it.
About the mass editing, I don't really agree with that. It's not supposed to be that simple. I think adding that will ruin the personal feel of the site, people will be removing and replacing all their friends in seconds– whereas taking the time to do so naturally makes you truly consider your actions. maaaybe MySpace had the feature but I like it the way it is.
if you don't want a ton of friends, you should add them more wisely instead of adding them and dropping them just like that.
I also think there should be time and research before any new feature is implemented. the last thing I want is for this site to end up straying far from MySpace because of new users who are used to modern social media (and I don't mean this to you personally, just saying it for everyone who's been requesting some features)
mass editing would rly be a v useful feature in a lot of regards
for instance, what if a blog post, bulletin, or profile comments section was suddenly overrun with a slew of problematic users (i.e. trolling/spam)
imagine having to MANUALLY WEED OUT ALL THAT MESS
whereas one click -> problem solved xoxo
but yea, my main gripe is the sheer lack of forum/group notifs
the main site forums rly are a ghost town and adding in extra notification/subscription options would dramatically improve all that :DD

I see where you're coming from, I still would like to keep the slow simple quality of the site. while bullying and trollings bad it's the internet at the end of the day, you can never have total control over it, what total strangers around the world are doing. I wouldn't want this site to end up too polished and cleaned up with people being able to wipe things out in seconds. perhaps that could be implemented for the mods' side, but even then i'd could argue thatd mean they won't be as deliberate

such a features like a search and notifications could also be added as third party downloadable tool...
I know its far from ideal but this way stuff can be worked in without coordination of the main platform.
Crawling the site and creating a searchable index with some ranking features shouldnt be too complicated

thing is tho, a third party offsite indexin service aimed at a niche nostalgia site might be counter productive as it requires a whole load of other ppl actually getting on board to use it :o
one thing i would love to see is a direct line of communication between users/staff for site suggestions, such as maybe a dedicated feedback forum
but ofc, we'd still need the notifs sorted out before it would be any use XDDD

If you could sort by recent activity or last replied it would make it much easier to interact with people. Aaringfantasy has a page for this and it works like a charm, the forum is always active.
yea like the fact that the top forum posts on here are from like 300 years ago with dead links and oldest replies sorted first is so dum like can people just let those threads die

NO ACTUALLY group posts automatically sorting from oldest first is so dumb .. there should be an option to filter from most popular, oldest, or newest entries like you can with blogs because 99% of people aren't going to go out of their way to click all the way through the group forums (especially on large groups) to find the new entries

u can see recent topics and comments in forum posts but it's still so poorly implemented cuz it keeps tricking you into thinking that old ass threads from 294820391091 eons ago are booming when in reality it's just rodents shouting into a graveyard
