A little over a week ago I got my tonsils out. I was looking forward to this since I frequently get sore throats and tonsil stones, which suck ass. I knew recovery would be tough, just not this tough. Every six hours, I'm taking off-brand Tylenol and I'm trying to stay hydrated which is easier said than done, since swallowing anything feels like swallowing shards of glass. Also, talking has been next to impossible.
I'm on day 9 of recovery (day one being the day of the operation since it was early in the day, like I got home from the hospital before noon early) and I'm just barely able to talk. As for food, apple sauce and yogurt on day one (idk how the hell I pulled that off), mac and cheese on day two (yikes), days 3 and 4, ice chips, lime Jell-o with half the water, (my mom said this helped her when she got hers out a few years ago) and more mac and cheese (this time with some broccoli). During this, I was on the couch, sitting up of course. My car was in the shop, so I couldn't go anywhere if I wanted to. I would watch TV, play on my phone, sleep, pet the cat, listen to whatever my mom or brother had to say, text my dad, just those kinds of things. This was also when the pain started getting bad. Swallowing, coughing, sneezing and chewing made the pain in my throat all the worse and also made my ears hurt. Also, the sides under my tongue. Especially in the back. Ugh. On day five, my car was ready to be picked up so my mom and I went out to pick it up. The ride to the shop was meh. Once we got there, we paid, got the key and took the car on a test drive. The drive home was rough. I drove through a service dead-spot so my music wouldn't load and my phone just kinda shut off so the rest of the ride was silent. Nothing to distract me from the pain. At least the weather was nice and everyone out knew how to drive.
The next day my mom and brother wanted to go out and do something and they wanted me to drive. I tried. I really did. But I couldn't. So my mom drove. Idk why but neither of them would shut up. They would also ask if I was okay, how I was doing, etc which got old really fast and was annoying since they knew I couldn't talk. We pulled over at Wendy's and got Frostys. At this point, my mom realized I was in no shape to go out so we just went back home. I felt pretty shitty about this but we could always try again later. On day six, I discovered Arizona green tea. That shit feels great during recovery. Especially warmed up. My mom picked up a case for me so I've been sipping on that since. The other day, my mom and brother got pizza and I got three containers of ice cream. For whatever reason, people always think that getting your tonsils out means you just get to eat ice cream all day but it actually feels terrible. I've had maybe a cup of ice cream in the past couple of days and it was very painful. I also had a box of frozen Mac and cheese that I heated in the microwave yesterday. I'm feeling better but I still have a hard time talking. At least it's become easier to eat and drink. It's still hard though. I can't wait for this to be all over.
Also, scabs. Where my tonsils were. I can't wait for those to come off. I know there's gonna be blood and all, but they're making my breath smell terrible. In the meantime I'm brushing my teeth like four times a day now and I bought a tongue scraper to compensate.
