Switch 2/Mario Kart World first impressions

The Switch 2 came out yesterday and I got one so let's talk about it!

Switch 2 in comparison to the original Switch

So the Switch 2's main difference is it's specs. But I don't want to talk about that so I wont tl;dr: the switch 2 is way more powerful than the switch 1.

The first thing I noticed is the overall size of the Switch 2. It's much bigger than the original in a good way. The screen is big and bright and looks fantastic. The joycons feel much sturdier, as if they're part of the screen instead of just loosely clinging to it. The button to detach the joycons felt a little bulky at first but I quickly got used to it. Overall I'd say the console will be worth the price after it builds up a bigger library.

Mario Kart World

I was very anxious about where they would take the Mario Kart series after 8 Deluxe. 8 really seemed to master the Mario Kart formula so just doing another basic Mario Kart felt like a bad idea. Luckily there are a number of ways they've evolved the gameplay in World.

Every track is interconnected and you get to drive from one to the next in-between races. It's a really neat feature, though I can't say it's super mind-blowing. There is also an open world free roam mode. It's fun and relaxing but certainly not a highlight for me. The music during free roam is fantastic though.

I think the two features that really make the game feel fresh are the parkour and 24-player races.

Now you can jump onto grindable rails and rideable walls! You get a boost for doing this and overall it's really fun. I do occasionally think you can jump onto something only to find I was wrong and fall to the ground, this is definitely frustrating but rare enough it's not a huge issue for me.

In every race there are 24 racers now, too! This makes races really intense and hectic early on. It's a ton of fun and works well with the open world. It feels like I'm never too far ahead or behind everyone else because there are so many racers. My only problem with this feature is that it means twice the items are being thrown around at any given point, making it way easier to get "Mario Karted"

Overall Mario Kart World is an absolute blast and the perfect launch game for the Switch 2 IMO. The only thing I do when I'm not playing it is think about it - hence this blog post.

Have you had any unique experiences with it yet? I wonder if you can bring up other kinds of aspects that people don't really talk about.

Not when I wrote this post. But I've seen no one point out the total lack of sound mixing options in Mario Kart World. The driving is too loud compared to the music for me, I wish I could change it. Nintendo has a serious problem with not including that sort of thing imo.

I've played a bit of No Man's Sky on it too, it runs well and looks great though not without some issues. I might by Fast Fusion, but between Mario Kart and F-Zero GX I already have 2 racing games for it. Otherwise I'm mostly waiting for DK Bananza to come out in mid-july.

Thanks for commenting ^_^

Nintendo's pre-set sound mixing has been perfect in current and past games for the most part, but it's defiantly an issue whenever someone wants to change it anyway for one reason or another. It is nice to have it set up so I don't need to mess with audio settings myself though.

It would be great to get it someday, but I am pretty sure one big reason they won't allow custom mixing is because it would make getting recordings of the music easier.
