Some time in the past
It’s a hot day. The sun casts beams of heat from overhead, shining down on the field below. Gym class. The teacher announces that we are to play kickball. And now we pick teams.
Dreaded words. “Let’s do girls versus boys!” someone says. Usually, a boy suggests it.
A wave of disappointment. Or maybe something else. An odd mix of anxiety, and discomfort.
Now we have to work more to “justify” a win.
If the boys win, they claim it was easy. Because we are girls.
If the boys lose, they yell and laugh and say they messed up bad. Because how could they lose to girls?
And I think… why? Why do we have to separate the both of us, and why do we have to be so black and white in our thinking?
I know plenty of strong women. Why is it that being a girl means they’re weaker?
It isn’t fair.
I hate “boys vs girls.”
Because then there’s more prejudice.
But I hate that there will always be prejudice.
