Traveling to Scotland

so ive been wanting to travel to scotland for a long time now, it may finally be my time to. Im planning on solo traveling there by backpack.. so im trying to ask some fellow brits/ scots what you recomend. 

I wanted to be mainly around Inverness, (how) is publik Tranportation around there?

Do you have some hostel recomandations?

Are there any other ways than getting around by car, are cabs expensive?

This has been a really long dream of me and i would really appreciate your help.
