Pride month poetry

I haven't written any poetry in a while so I figured Id make a blog about it for pride month. This is a time not only for the gays but also to just generally be proud of yourself. I love all my friends and my boygirlfriend for making me feel like I belong, for not getting annoyed when I be myself and for embracing me when I need it most. Before I met all the ppl ik now, I didn't realize how unhappy I was. And this is why I'm proud to call these the ppl the ones that I love. Mainly bc family doesn't have to be the ppl you're born with, they're the ppl who make you laugh when you're with them and hold you close when you're sad. Family are the ppl who make you feel loved, cared for and respected, and the ppl who make you feel at home. 

I still see who you are

I notice a lot
like when you put up your hair,                                                                                              then huff when you can't get it right.                                                                                        Or when you smile when you're nervous                                                                                  because you don't know what to say.                                                                                      The way you hug me a little tighter                                                                                      when you missed me more than usual.                                                                                 Little things you don't think about when it happens,                                                                  things that I see everyday.

I see the way you wince at your own reflection
not out of vanity,
but because you haven’t yet learned
how extraordinary you are
when you're just being.

And still, I love all of it.
The pieces you try to hide,
the ones you dismiss with a shrug or a joke
those are the ones I hold closest.
Because they’re you.
And I am proud.
Proud of the way you keep going,
even when your voice shakes,
even when you feel like disappearing.
Proud of your strength,
even on the days when you don't recognize it as strength.

And I’m proud of myself, too
for learning how to hold this kind of love,
gently but with both hands.
For showing up,
not just when you shine,
but especially when you dim.
For loving you honestly,
not in spite of your shadows,
but because of them.

You don’t have to love every part of yourself
for me to love every part of you.
That’s not your job.
That’s mine.

And I’ll keep doing it
every quiet day that I get to have you
