in this blog post ill be discussing emo music as a genre and its roots in the hardcore scene feel free to correct and put any input you may have.
to properly tell the story of emo music we must look at the dc hardcore punk scene with bands like minor threat and bad brains aggressive and almost manic styling. minor threat a straight edge band fronted by influential musician ian mckaye was most prominent in the hardcore scene. mckaye was tired of the violence in the scene caused by moshing and aggressive crowds so with his next musical project fugazi he tried to quell any violent moshing by atypical rhythms and a more melodic style. while these changes took the hardcore sound in a new direction it still held on to the hardcore base. fugazi would often touch on more contemplative subjects in the songs and this allowed for a less macho uniform from their bands. this band inspired Guy picciotto to form the band rites of spring which is widely regarded as the first emo band. this band fully embraced the emotional and contemplative side of these bands and with ian mckaye, guy picciotto formed the band embrace. this style of music was dubbed emo-core. unfortunately due to internal conflict this scene quickly dissolved. this genre was re invented inthe early nineties by bands like jaw breaker and sunny day real estate this genre came into its own in the underground while bands like nirvana and green day gained huge mainstream popularity. during this time bands like cap n jazz, jimmy eat world, and the get up kids braught a newer indie element to the scene mixing in math rock influences with their music. jimmy eat worlds album "bleed american" shot emo music into the mainstream and this new generation of bands blended alot of pop punk influences and this gave rise to bands like my chemical romance, fall out boy, the used, mayday parade, panic at the disco and paramore. while some of theese bands are not considered "emo" by many in the scene it is undeniable the impact theese bands have had on the scene, and on a personal note i think youre a real prick to shit on people who like these bands and call them emo. while they may not be as deep into the scene as some other music they have introduced many young kids into the scene and on top of that have some pretty kick ass albums. just cause you dont like it doesnt mean its any less in the scene. in the late 2000s and early 2010s a revival of classic "midwest emo" was pioneered by bands like joyce manor, modern baseball, the front bottoms and pinegrove and this has been the predominant genre of emo music in the mainstream. emo music has spun off into many different genres of music such as screamo (or skramz for the cronically online) and has had a major hand in the "scene" subculture and the "metalcore" subgenre
