Im so over living here.. for context, I live in a small town, not with 20k or whatever (that's huge!!) but there's around 1.5k people here ;_; u cant make this up. There's basically nothing to do other than go to a convenience store or main street, which is only a few blocks long and most things close before 6pm! :(
Ppl may not know this but lots of everyone in small towns look the same, act the same, and are related. That includes me, which blew my mind that I'm second cousins w a guy who used to pick on me. But because there's this sorta pressure to fit in and do what everyone else does, I feel extremely out of place. Ive definitely dealt with it first hand. Even having dyed hair (FADED) gets you made fun of. Im one of the I think 10? alternative people who exist here, which I'm glad it might maybe be double digits but still. there's not a lot of them at school
there might be a few in grades above me, and one in my grade, which is also my best friend, so that's great :D but other than that there no "alt scene" here. so that's why I will try to create it!
it sounds very hefty, I know, but I'm determined to change this place for the better. there are waaay too many narrow-minded, judgy, and ignorant people here and they wont change, if they think you look 'weird', then that's their mindset for ever. I'll try to make a space where weirdos can shine and not feel like a piece a clay they have to mold to look like everyone elses. I'm learning the guitar, practicing performing alone, so that the day I'm ready to hold my first garage show, it'll be enough to shake someone, or atleast get them thinking instead of staying in their same old prejudiced ways
Anyways, does anyone else live in a small town, as someone who "stands out"? if so what are ur tips to not losing your mind (which I've done quite a lot lol) its hard not go completely mad when ur in the middle of nowhere with people as open-minded as a crack in pavement.

I get it!! 1,000 or so people live in the same town I do, & it sucks around here. I'm not nearly as alternative as I used to be, but I'm just as queer. It's horrible how unaccepting people are to anyone not like them. I hope things get better out there for you.
thank you, I think I just need to be more confident in myself and stop caring what others think :) best of luck for you too i know these towns can seem like hell

In my experience, people stop caring about things once they get used to seeing it. My advice; just be you, even if people hate it! Their initial disdain dies out eventually.
