life as a satanist

being a satanist has it's pros and cons, like any religion and/or philosophy.

when i make the offhand mention that i'm a satanist, people either get very interested, which i always appreciate, or they get mildly uncomfortable. the thing about satanism is that whenever it's brought up, images of people dressed in cloaks, dancing like idiots in the woods around a bonfire, and practicing sacrifice rituals comes to mind. This is... interesting to say the least. I think these ideas came mostly from pagan religions but slowly over time became part of the satanist mythos.

I want to make something very clear: there are two kinds of satanist, and neither of them do this (as far as I know). There's the aethestic satanist, which is what I am, and there's the thestic satanist. Aethestic satanists practice the virtues and philosophy of satanism via self-empowerment, good deeds, trusting others, and living life to the fullest. Meanwhile thestic satanists believe there is a literal goat demon creature and that's what they worship. I'm not gonna go busting anyone's balls for believing in what you wanna believe in. Unless you're hurting yourself or others, I really have no reason to get upset. it's just that, personally, i can't see myself worshipping a god.

it's just too weird i dunno. like, i have entertained the idea of becoming a christian before, but i just cannot fathom a single god being the only one(s) to exist. There are multiple religions for a reason and neither one is more true or right than any other. christianity is no more true or right than judaism, and judaism is no more true or right than islam, rinse and repeat. and if it's only one god that exists, why do all the other ones get brought up? why have those stuck around for so long? i guess it could be like paganism and greek mythology, but then again there are people in the world who practice those religions as well!

it's just a lot. if i had to be religious, i would prefer if one was assigned to me. "there you go kid" the preacher would say "this is the gospel truth. everything else is a croc'a horseshit, sonny". to me, it isn't as simple as just "picking one". how do you pick one? especially knowing everything else?

to me it's either to just ignore it or integrate parts of their philosophies into my life. i stick with the latter for now. it's mostly christian philosophy though - love thy neighbor, treat others as you would treat yourself, stuff like that. but the satanist bit comes in with the things i actually believe and also practice in my day-to-day life - be a good person for the sake of being a good person, not living in fear of a god/judgement, being GAY and HAVING SEX (i wish lol), etc.

i have met good christians. i have met awful, awful christians. belonging to a religion doesn't make you a good person, it's your deeds and behavior that make you a good person. this isn't a new idea but i guess some people don't get the message.

i hope this little rant made you ponder your own philosophies and how you live your life. i'm not trying to offend anybody, make anyone feel bad, or indoctrinate anybody. but if this made you feel upset in any way, use that energy to really reflect on how you live your life and why this harmless blog post made you feel that way. but at the risk of sounding like your second grade teacher, i'll just shut up lol.

see y'all next time :P

Hi. I’m a Christian but I’m not going to have a go at you for being a Satanist. I just want to give an example from my own life of what you said about there being good Christians and awful Christians. My mom and my dad are both Christians but very opposite in the type of people that they are. My dad is a brutal violent control freak. My mom is a positive and loving person who I try to be as much like her as I can. My mom says that the golden rule,do unto others as you would have them do unto you,can be found in all the major religions not just the Bible. She says that anyone can live by that (and she really lives by it)whether they believe in one God,many gods or no god and that is more important than trying to convert everyone to your own beliefs. That’s why I don’t go about armed with a Bible firing verses of scripture at everyone. I care about how people treat each other not whether they believe the same as me. That’s why I don’t even mention about being a Christian on my profile. Also I only mention it in discussion with people when it’s genuinely relevant.(I know so many Christians who try to change the subject of every conversation into an attempt to convert people). If someone wants to know about my beliefs I will tell them about them but if they don’t then I will respect that. You are absolutely correct that belonging to a religion doesn’t make someone a good person.

It kind of seems like Aesthetic Satanism is just atheism with a written moral framework.

So what does Satan actually have to do with it? If there's no belief in Satan, why call it Satanism?

Not trying to be rude—genuinely curious. Is the name mainly just meant to provoke Christians or distance from Christianity, or is there something deeper behind it?

I think that's what they meant actually I don't know what aesthetic satanist is as a satanist, but I'm an atheist satanist it could have just been a misspelling, as they happen to sound very similar in definitions.

I'm not the user but if it's okay I can answer it!!
Satanism itself is not actually meant to provoke anyone, the term is considered the 'original' and had always begun like that, later on people had started using satanism as a scapegoat religion (like the satanic panic) basically to make people scared into joining their religion, which led satanism to be hidden from most people but satanism was always the one with that label (at least what's stated in the satanic bible, believe what you want.)

Although it is true that satanism was later reclaimed as a more "empowering" idea, satanism had never actually been danger or a myth.

I can relate to you so much with this! It was like reading my own mind lol.

I am also atheistic satanist, I live in small town where I almost everyday meet Jehovah's witnesses almost daily. Its kinda annoying tbh because they don't "look" religious you know. Like a regular people like us satanists. But thing is, I tend to stay and chat with them without me knowing their witnesses.. and they each time give me some kind of paper with link to their "Jesus" website. I have gotten that dumb paper from them everytime.. I really want to tell them next time that I'm a satanist.

I'm aware that word "Satansim" is spooky and frighting to some, but I generally find it to represent comfort, equality and freedom on self expression. I love to be strange and 100% myself. I'm glad I found your post!

Have a good day!
