May 27, 2025: Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning (2025) !
Renviews won't assign numerical ratings to media or individual parts of it. I'm just here to get my thoughts out about something I enjoyed! (Or otherwise.) Spoilers abound!
♡
I have a confession.
I have never watched a Mission: Impossible movie before this one.
That being said, I enjoyed this movie all the way through.
I'm not too sure if there's much to be said, considering the Mission: Impossible series is one of the biggest action movie series of all time (if not the biggest), but I'll see what I can do.
First off, the tension was so thick you could cut it with a knife. Of course, in the back of your mind there will always be the "there's no way they'll fail, completing an 'impossible mission' is the whole point of the series" thought, but that doesn't change how it all feels in the moment. I found myself unintentionally holding my breath more than a few times, especially in the second half. The suspense was so strong and it was amazing. Made the whole experience very fun!
The highlight of the film for me was the submarine scene. I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it, but there was a special flavor of uncertainty there. I think it's because there was a lot on the line when it came to reaching the sub. The Entity's source code was in there, and the stakes were so high that Ethan Hunt had no choice but to descend and ascend the depths so quickly that he got the bends. The sub's weight being shifted as water filled it and the movement hindering Ethan's movement made the whole scene intense, especially knowing that the submarine was still armed with many torpedoes. Oh man did it stress me out every time the torpedoes fell from their racks and hit each other. I kept expecting an explosion... At least it was funny when Ethan said "torpedo hole" after minutes of silence. I guess maybe that was to let the audience know what the hatches were? But they're hatches that are in the torpedo room that lead outside... I think maybe the audience could infer...
There were a good number of fun cinematography decisions throughout the film. My personal favorite was... haha it was in the submarine scene again. That really is the part I like the best, huh. As the sub rotated due to the incoming water, the camera didn't rotate with it, givng the scene a disorienting feeling. It reminded me of the rotating hallway from Inception (2010). I'm not sure if it was meant to be a direct reference or just a unique personal choice, but I sure did enjoy it.
Overall, this was a fun watch! A good action movie to get your blood pumping if you're in the mood for it. Of course the rest of the film is enjoyable as well, don't take my talk of the submarine scene as the only good part of it! Hopefully, if you go see it yourself, you'll enjoy it too!
Thanks for reading! I hope my thoughts were interesting, and I hope you have a great day!
