Labubus, Cult of Consumption and Late Capitalism Meltdown

Okay.I need to talk about Labubus. Those creepy little things that look like a cursed bunny with human teeth. I don’t care if they’re limited edition or whatever—the fact that people are paying $200+ for a glorified keychain is actually insane. Before anyone comes for me, no, I’m not “just a hater.” I love collecting cool stuff. But there’s a difference between cool and clown behavior. And this? This is full-on circus. Apparently, they’re part of some art toy line made by this guy named Kasing Lung. They're supposed to be “monsters” inspired by Nordic folklore. Sounds cool in theory. But then you see them, and it’s like... why does it have teeth like that? Why does it look like a nightmare stuffed animal that watched too much YouTube at 3 a.m.?

But hey, TikTok loves them. And that’s where the real issue starts. People don’t even like Labubus because they’re cute. They like them because they’re rare. Limited. Hyped. People are camping outside Pop Mart stores, throwing hands in the comments over blind boxes, and dropping cash like it’s nothing just to flex the one their fave influencer has.

It’s not about style anymore. It’s about status.

And social media eats that shit up. One person posts an unboxing video, and suddenly it’s like, “Omg I NEED this!” No, girl, you need water and to touch some grass.

This is what happens when people have more content than attention spans. We’re so brain-fried from constant media that we’ll chase anything that looks new, “aesthetic,” or rare. Doesn’t matter if it’s ugly. If it’s trending, it’s desirable. Period. Labubus are just another symptom of the sickness. We’re trained to consume first, think later. If you’re not buying, you’re missing out. If you’re not collecting, you’re irrelevant. If you don’t get it, you’re just not cool enough. No. I get it. It just sucks. I’m not mad at people for liking weird things. Be quirky, be different. I love that. But don’t pretend Labubus are some deep expression of identity or art. They’re plushy clout tokens, mass-produced and sold under the illusion of exclusivity. You don’t need to buy into every trend to matter. Not everything you see on TikTok is worth your time or money. And if something gives you the ick? It’s okay to say, “Nah, I’m good.”

As for Labubus... they can stay in whatever haunted toy box they crawled out of. I’m not drinking the Kool-Aid. And honestly? It tastes like plastic anyway.

Yeah it's about status. You know those girls who are always friends with everyone then it's revealed that they talk shit about everything on the planet? That's the type of girl that has these! There's a girl in my class like that and she has like 2 Labubu's on her bag

I don't even understand, they aren't cute, they aren't ugly-cute. They're ugly-ugly, people try to justify their capitalist views by saying " Oh this is like emos when they had ugly-cute stuff from Hot Topic " no that was different, those WERE different because almost nobody wanted them, it was about being different and liking unique stuff I guess, unlike Labubu's that are only liked because they're popular

wish i could give be a thousand kudos. seriously, i hate how fashion (as they can be considered so, in an accessory kind of way), a form of art that should be about self expression, personal taste and being different from the mass becomes just a way for people to say “hey, i’m cool too because i follow this specific microtrend that everyone else is following”. i get that fashion is, in part, a way to create social groups and interactions, being also culturally significant, but it’s not even that at this point. it’s not doing what a certain group of people you like is doing. it got to the point where it’s just doing what everyone fucking else is doing just cause they post it on tiktok as the next big thing that you need to have if you wanna be cool. you have to buy it. spend your money. waste your resources. it’s just brainwash at this point.

It's always been about status, not fashion

It also steps into the category of wealth and money priorities. How much are you willing (or able) to spend to get some rare toy that'll get you likes on Tiktok? I hate the insane consumerism and "better than you" mindset of modern social media. Whatever you do, someone's always doing it bigger or better. This can't be good for your mental health, you'll lose motivation! And half the time, it's unnecessarily better, like people who would have Stanley cup collections... Like, maybe one or two would be good? At that point when you have a whole rainbow of them, they cease to be cups and almost start being trophies.

Also no hate to collectors (sorry if it sounded that way, I'm a collector myself) but the way these people are collecting, and the reasons they are doing it are not right.
