i finished my second book this year >:P
this one was not as popular or well known as bunny, but it's called a cold night for alligators by viggy parr hampton. going in, i only knew the synopsis, that it was about an abaondoned theme park that's kinda haunted and causing some sort of outbreak that the CDC was investigating. something about urban explorers, too, which made me excited.
as for the book itself, it was pretty good! the first 2/3 were really enjoyable and intriguing. there was good pacing, and it was a great balance between the horror and the personal subplots of the characters. the horror itself had to do with a type of heroin that was causing botulism, and hampton wasn't afraid of getting veryΒ very descriptive with that aspect of the story. i couldn't read it while eating, haha
the third act was not as good though :/
like, it was fine overall, but she introduced two characters way later into the story than the rest of them, and honestly, i didn't even like them. it's kind of obvious that the author is an only child, because the way she wrote these two brothers was ruining their pov's entirely. such a shame, too! im really into urban exploring, and they were urban explorer youtubers making a video about the theme park.
there were just these constant phrases that felt so corny and unrealistic when it comes to how brothers & siblings in general actually treat each other. she also kept on shoving in so many flashbacks about them that i just skipped because i wanted to know about the actual plot going on.
and then, of course, these are the characters that carry the climax and the ending. the ones that you spend the entire story with are just... locked in a closet or something? and i just have to listen to one of the brothers bring up all of the stuff in the flashbacks to stop the other one from getting possessed or something.
the ending itself was awkward, too. it's just like 3 chapters (and an epilogue!) of exposition about what happened after, and there's nothing that explains the actually bigger mysteries about the book, like the people that were going missing, or how the drugs got in the theme park, etc etc.
however, if you're not too grossed out with books, i'd still recommend it! overall it was an interesting book, and it had all of the good spooky summer vibes i wanna bury myself in this summer

you're so right on the siblings part. I hate it when they are written in a way that makes me feel that the author has never interacted with a sibling. Then again, I used to struggle with writing realistic sibling relationships, so I wouldn't really blame them. It sounds like an interesting book though!
