Morning Supplication

In the Name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful

O Thou Who caused the tongue of dawn to speak with its radiant brilliance,
Who dispelled the fragments of darkest night with waves of shimmering light,
Who perfected the craft of the revolving spheres in measures of their orbits,
And made the sun's radiance blaze with kindled splendor—

O Thou Who pointed to His Essence by His Essence,
Transcendent beyond resemblance to His creatures,
Exalted above conformity to mortal qualities—

O Thou Who is nearer than fleeting thoughts,
Yet farther than the reach of mortal sight,
Knowing what was before existence came to be—

O Thou Who laid me down in the cradle of Thy security,
And awakened me to Thy bounties and grace,
Restraining hands of harm from me by Thy might—

Bless, O God, the Guide to Thee through murky night,
Who grasps Thy cords with the noblest tie,
Of purest lineage in ancestry's highest crest,
Steadfast upon life's slippery paths since Time's first dawn—

And bless his chosen, purified progeny.

Open for us, O God, the gates of morn with keys of mercy and success.
Clothe me, O Lord, in the finest robes of guidance and righteousness.
Plant, by Thy Majesty, springs of reverence in my heart's core,
Let awe of Thee draw tears from my eyes' depths,
And discipline my waywardness with reins of contentment.

My Lord!
If Thy mercy initiate me not with fair success,
Who then shall lead me on the straight path to Thee?
If Thy care abandon me to hopes and desires,
Who shall raise me from folly's stumbles?
If Thy aid forsake me against soul and Satan's war,
Thy withdrawal leaves me to toil and deprivation.

My God!
Dost Thou see me come to Thee save through hopes?
Or cling to Thy cords save when sins barred union's door?
Wretched is the mount my soul hath ridden—its desires!
Woe unto it for what its whispers promised!
Cursed be its audacity toward its Master!

My Lord!
I knock at mercy's door with hope's hand,
Fleeing to Thee, refuge from wayward passions,
Hanging my trust upon Thy ropes.
Pardon, O God, my slips and errors,
Lift me from sin's abyss—
For Thou art my Master, my Trust, my Hope,
The ultimate Quest in life's journey.

My God!
How turnest Thou away a wretch fleeing sins to Thee?
Or disappointest a seeker striving toward Thee?
Or denyest a thirsting one at Thy pools?
Nay! Thy pools overflow in drought's grip,
Thy door stands open to seekers,
Thou art the Goal of all petitions.

My Lord!
Here are my soul's reins—I bind them with Thy will's halter.
Here are sin's burdens—I cast them upon Thy pardon.
Here are misleading desires—I entrust them to Thy gentleness.

Make this morn descend upon me with light of guidance,
With safety in faith and worldly affairs.
Let my evening be armor against foes' plots,
A shield from desire's pitfalls.

Verily Thou art Able over all things,
Granting dominion to whom Thou wilt,
Withdrawing it from whom Thou wilt,
Exalting whom Thou wilt, abasing whom Thou wilt.
In Thy hand is all good—Thou art Omnipotent.

Thou mergest night into day and day into night,
Bringest forth living from dead and dead from living,
Providest without measure whom Thou wilt.

None is worthy of worship but Thee!
Glory be to Thee—who knows Thy might but fears Thee not?
Who comprehends Thee but stands in awe?

By Thy power Thou unitest what was sundered,
By Thy grace Thou cleavest the dawn,
Dispellest gloom's darkness with Thy bounty,
Bringest forth sweet and bitter waters from flinty rocks,
Sendest torrents from laden clouds,
Made sun and moon as luminous lamps—
Without weariness or effort.

O Thou Unique in Majesty and Eternity,
Who subduest Thy servants by death and decay—
Bless Muhammad and his pious progeny,
Hear my call, answer my plea,
Fulfill by Thy grace my hope and longing.

O Best of those invoked to relieve distress,
Hope in every hardship and ease—
To Thee I lay my need:
Turn me not empty from Thy bounteous gifts,
O Most Generous! (thrice repeated)

By Thy mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful!
And may God bless His finest creation,
Muhammad and all his pure household.
