recently, i have been making onigiri a lot for a filling meal with a good amount of protein! it also works very well as a quick meal that will last for food prepping (:
this makes ~3 good sized onigiri which can also be split into multiple meals!
cooking the rice usually takes me about an hour in a pot (but it isnt very intensive)
actually making the onigiri after the rice is cooked usually only takes 20 minutes or less
ingredients (what i use but there are many other recipes)
1 cup sushi rice (i use Homai California Calrose Rice but really anything works)
salmon or tuna (canned)
mayo
teriyaki sauce (or sriracha for a spicy version of the filling)
saran wrap
optional:
avocado
everything seasoning
Steps
1. Cook rice
- u can use a rice cooker but i usually make it in a normal pot
- get 1 cup of rice and wash it (until water is mostly clear)
- fill up pot with enough water to reach your knuckles when putting your hand palm down in the pot with the rice in it
- leave rice to sit for ~30 minutes (at least 15 really)
- boil rice for about 5 minutes on high (no lid)
- turn heat down to low until it stops boiling then put lid on and let cook for 20 minutes
- not letting it stop boiling tends to make it overflow for me, but it doesnt matter with certain lids
- stir and steam for another 5 minutes off the heat
- optional: mix in everything seasoning (:
2. Prep salmon/tuna
- open the can into a bowl
- add about one small spoon of mayo (more moisture will come from the sauce)
- add a drizzling of teriyaki or sriracha sauce
- mix together
- optional avocado
- this uses very little avocado, so i tend to use the rest for a salad
- cut part (about 1/4) of an avocado into chunks and add to meat
3. Forming it
- Get saran wrap and take out a little less than a foot (30 cm) worth of it out
- Place saran wrap on a flat surface and scoop out ~1/3 of the rice
- Flatten rice in a square shape and put about 1/3 of the meat in the center
- fold saran wrap diagonally to make the square into a triangle
- secure wrap tightly around the onigiri and place in the fridge to cool
- repeat 2x to make 3 onigiri
4. Eat!
- I sometimes dip the onigiri into some teriyaki sauce cuz it is my fav sauce ever but it isnt neccessary! ppl also tend to dip it in soy sauce which i have heard is good (i just dont like soy sauce for some reason)
disclaimer - i am white and bad at cooking lol but this does taste very good and doesnt require much skill (:
