social media bans

i think outright social media bans for children are short-sighted and misguided but i do support legislation to protect children. imo a multi-pronged approach would be most effective at this aim (protecting children and their mental health), and the way i would go about it if i were a politician is this:

  • require reverse-chronological feeds on social media for all ages. things like fyps and algorithm-driven content could be toggled on depending on the platform, but it is NOT the default
  • decentralize social media in general so everyone isn't using the same four sites (with places like spacehey and neocities currently being a small minority of users, which is sadddd)
  • being stricter on influencer advertising rules and not showing these advertisements to anyone under... let's say 16
  • requiring use of filters/photo editing to be disclosed like in some other countries
  • bring back spaces actually intended for children online! anyone remember the OLD monster high and barbie websites online? when it was a bunch of games, no login required? those were the days
  • make real-life more kid friendly! make parks closer to residential areas so families with less time or no ability to drive can still access them, fund schools more so things like clubs and home-ec are more common, and encourage the culture of visiting places like libraries, roller rinks, and arcades
  • stop the oversexualization of minors ffs
the oversexualization is a societal issue and would be harder to do, but i feel like changes to social media would help a bit, because it's influencers pushing shopping sprees and baddie culture that's pressuring young girls especially to grow up so fast.

this also pressures parents to encourage this behavior. not that i think parents shouldn't be held accountable for it! they absolutely should! it's just important to keep in mind that it's all marketing at its core.

however, corporations are also responsible for making children's clothing (especially for little girls) smaller and smaller. ULTIMATELY it is their fault for said marketing at the end of the day, and change starts with them
