Besides being a metalhead I'm also a big fan of pop music (the queernes came out of nowhere,, I swear¿), but not only that,, one of my interests is religion, which I don't speak much about cus it's rlly weird irl, but we're on spacehey so who cares lol.
With no further ado... Lady Gaga, before becoming the icon she's nowadays, was raised with catholic beliefs and attended the "Convent of the Sacred Heart", a private all-girls school.
What does this has to do with all this? Well, it's very obvious, Gaga knows her shit and Judas is the example of that.
Before starting, better watch the music video first.

At the beginning we can see a group of bikers, the 12 apostles, with one of them carrying Lady Gaga, to be specific; Jesus of Nazareth and Mary Magdalene, the apostle of apostles, Jesus' closest disciple (speculated wife by scholarly theories but rejected due to lack of historical and textual evidence).
All bikers are on their way to "the last supper" which here would be "the last dance" to call it something lol. Mary Magdalene is presented as Jesus' girlfriend, that, by how the song goes, has her eyes on Judas instead.
Lyrics:
- "I'll wash his feet with my hair if he needs" is reference to Lucas 7:36-8:3, where one of the Pharisees (Simon) invited Jesus to eat, so he went to the Pharisee's house and sat down at the table. Now there was a woman in that town who was known as a sinner (Mary of Bethany/Mary Magdalene are the same, in some traditions they are different). When she found out that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee's house, she brought an alabaster jar of perfume. Weeping, she fell at Jesus' feet and bathed them in her tears. Then she wiped his feet with her hair; she kissed him and anointed him with the perfume. Which to this, Jesus forgives her sins staying that "If she has loved much, it is because her many sins have been forgiven. But who is forgiven little, loves little."
- "Forgive him when his tongue lies through his brain" Isaiah 59:3-5 which, in the King James translation, admonishes those whose “… hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity..."
- "Even after three times, he betrays me" is an allusion to the denial of Jesus by Saint Peter. During the last supper (recounted by all four canonical gospels) Jesus foretold that Peter would deny his faith three times before the following cockcrow. Ofc Saint Peter has nothing to do on this context, but is correlated to the betrayal to Jesus.
There are in-between scenes, were Lady Gaga is dancing in a "revealing" red outfit in the middle (of you could say a town) contrasting with other more dressed people around.
- John 8:3-5 "The religion scholars and Pharisees led in a woman who had been caught in an act of adultery. They stood her in plain sight of everyone and said, “Teacher, this woman was caught red-handed in the act of adultery. Moses, in the Law, gives orders to stone such persons. What do you say?”" Which is also said that the sinner in question is Mary Magdalene. (This will be important later)
Afterwards, there's a change of character that Lady Gaga is representing. We can see her wearing a blue hood with a red bandana, and the scared heart of Jesus embroidered in the middle of her chest, representing now the Saint Mary, mother of Jesus.
On this clip, we see Saint Mary besides Jesus walking in the middle of a multitude. On some parts we see people holding wooden boards at the back, Jesus blessing people, Saint Mary without expression comforting another woman and chaos in general that denotes the start of the stations of the cross.
Lyrics:
- “I couldn’t love a man so purely” Proverbs 22:11 says that “Those who love a pure heart and are gracious in speech will have the king as a friend”. Saint Mary is characterized by her purity, which Mary Magdalene is portrayed as the opposite by her repentance of sinning, so her love will never be pure due to her sins (adoring Judas).
- “A king with no crown” In Matthew 27:29 “They put a reed in his right hand and knelt before him and mocked him, saying, ‘Hail, King of the Jews!’” was stated about the soldiers who crucified Jesus placing a crown of thorns on his head.
At the end of the chorus, we go back to Mary Magdalene. She's with Jesus, holding a gun straight to Judas' face to prove her devotion to "faith". Instead of a bullet, lipstick comes out of the muzzle and spreads it through his lips, betraying Jesus right on his face.
The lipstick could represent lust, an uncontrollable desire for sexual satisfaction towards Judas from Mary Magdalene, succumbing to sin for him.
Now there's two things are occurring simultaneously:
Mary Magdalene, Jesus and Judas on the same bath, with Magdalene washing the feet of both men. In the bible, washing the feet of another is a symbol of respect, service, humility and admiration. Mary Magdalene, since she's in this limbo between sin and good, serves both Jesus and Judas. Facing Jesus as sacred but willingly giving her back for Judas, who demonstrates lust and pride by pouring beer over her.
And the kiss of Judas, the close of his betrayal. It's not demonstrated but you could assume that it ends with the crucifixion of Jesus, which could also be Judas keeping Mary Magdalene for himself.
And to finally end things, remember the paragraph I've told you was important? The last clip is just about that. Mary Magdalene is no longer with Jesus, now just a sinner with people stoning her to death for it. If it wasn't for Jesus, that's the faith Magdalene would have faced instead of being let alive.
- John 8:6-11 "They were using this question as a trap, in order to have a basis for accusing him. But Jesus bent down and started to write on the ground with his finger. When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” Again he stooped down and wrote on the ground. At this, those who heard began to go away one at a time, the older ones first, until only Jesus was left, with the woman still standing there. Jesus straightened up and asked her, “Woman, where are they? Has no one condemned you?” “No one, sir,” she said. “Then neither do I condemn you,” Jesus declared. “Go now and leave your life of sin.”"

This is an amazing analysis! I loved reading it. Im not really into Lady Gaga, but I might have to give this song a listen.
thank u for the appreciation :) I've always found interesting the many things that go unnoticed, even years after the release! Many just called it blasphemy without giving it a go first, that, besides being a catchy song, is an example on how the bible can inspire art, which is the most humane thing to exist.
