indie/emo <3 (imagine that's a black heart emoji) version

don't forget to click the notable links in title. I did minimal research to find performances worth listening to! it takes a lot of mediocre work to make these blogs happen give me kudos because I give you music and besitos.

emma goldman - all you are is we (2025)
genre: emotional hardcore, screamo
FFO: clay birds, heavy heavy low low
rating: 9/10

this band puts the emo </3 in emotional hardcore. and the hardcore in it. they are chaotic, energetic, frenzied, and at times melodic. I absolutely loved this album upon first listen and would recommend it to anyone who loves the chaos and intricate john hancocks of bands like midori and 385. male and female vocals which is a huge thumbs up from me, the duet junkie. songs I would recommend: minimum wage, corporatizing polyamory, I don't think much at all

cash only tony's - demo (2025)
genre: screamo, indie folk
FFO: the sawtooth grin, the lazarus plot, me and him call it us
rating: 9/10

GREAT ALBUM ART FROM THIS WACKY GROUP

they're so zannnyyyyyy we love them! this demo album featuring elements of screamo, metalcore, sasscore, and indie folk. these guys seem really random and out in left field but they play well together because their message remains: "we are just having fun". they give the best of what modern music has to offer with their blend of genres and unserious themes, once again harkening back to the mid 2000's sasscore movement. can't wait to see what else they come up with. songs I would recommend: seymour waits for fry, chipmunk head, 7 leaf clover

artist recommendation: cenobite (two dots over the "o") (active since 2022)
genre: screamo, modern punk
FFO: itchy kitty, buio omega, deli girls
rating: 10/10

this band has two releases available for streaming including 2022's the see through glove and 2023's with arms crossed. in terms of genre they change their tune from one release to another, going from a sort of modern punk metal-inspired vibe to screamo with their most recent release. I feel like that's kind of backwards in terms of what modern bands are doing. I think we are going to see a migration away from the current "skramz" (I hate that zoomer nonsense term) culture to other genres. I thoroughly enjoy both albums but screamo can lean into corny territory for me if it takes itself to seriously, and simultaneously it's just not serious enough. as that guy in that tiktok said "scream rock is a young man's game". for me it's this album I featured in the album cover that takes the cake for me. the vocalist's screams and wails are so strong and unique that it doesn't really matter what the band is doing instrumentally. they are the star of the show. the vocals really are plated as a decadent confection. that is not to say that the instrumentals are lacking on this album, they are admirably chaotic throughout. songs I would recommend: old country buffet 3, old country buffet 1, cow says concrete

xiu xiu - knifeplay (2002)
genre: indie/experimental
FFO: model/actriz, daughters, melt-banana
rating: 8/10

maybe I have unsophisticated or low brow taste but this first album from xiu xiu has to be my favorite. I am still in the process of consuming and analyzing their entire discography because it's pretty extensive. on the spectrum of experimental xiu xiu albums this one leans a little more harmonious yet atonal than others, which checks two boxes for a great album. it is a cohesive unit with many of the same instruments being used on every track, and the same primitive industrial type percussion you may come to expect from xiu xiu. I would be remiss if I didn't mention the emotive as they ever were vocals of the captivating Jamie Stewart. if you're going to listen to this album I would recommend doing so all the way through with shuffle  turned OFF. it's an experience.

operelly - handwriting practice no. 1 (EP) (2025)
genre: indie
FFO: may rio, brittle brian
rating: 9/10

for fans of indie/downtempo/folk this album is a new release and a must-listen. I found this artist on tiktok, she has an incredible voice and stage presence when she's doing solo performances. she feels like an artist like clairo in the late 2010's, where she would upload a guitar rendition with a photobooth video to youtube and start to blow up years later... but clearly this album would require a band for the established drum kit and other instruments. operelly is serving up tracks as fresh as the great trish keenan of Broadcast, with chilled jazzy beats and some drum machines as well as lilting vocals with an indie-tinged thought-provoking tambor. operelly also thanks trish keenan in her album's credits. the lyrical content on this EP is straightforward yet abstract, with poetic phrases that leave you pondering. I recommend every track here.

heyyyyyyyyyyyy if you made it this far thanks for reading give me kudos I give U besitos... seriously ;) let me know if you hated the indie and emo write up this week...

Thanks,
