the lack of creativity in our youth scares me.

it is TERRIFYING. you heard me. how do you not get the urge to create?? how do you not get the urge to create. something new, something that has never been thought about, not remaking or putting a twist on something that has already been made over and over again.
the fact that people just do what they're told by mainstream media is terrifying. it's something that disturbs me, deeply. how can you not develop a proper opinion on stuff only looking at the fact and not the bias? how can you not defy your biases?? are you neck deep in your beliefs? are you unconscious? like most people are? it is deeply disturbing.
the only animals capable of thinking yet we fail and get spoonfed how we should act, how we should talk, walk, eat, move, dress, and be told what we need to do in our private time. because if you're one of the people that don't think about the world around them, who live in auto pilot, I think you need to wake the fuck up, go read on important topics, get informed. for your own sake, no one elses. for your own opinions without being engulfed in your own pride and take notes about others. because otherwise you're gonna live a life that's just like a house built without a foundation. and that is deeply disturbing, through and through. โ˜บ

TL;DR
wake up your consciousness, read... go outside to see other's perspective and create new stuff no one as ever thought before, don't waste your time and life.

I think a lot of it has to do with our modern day relationship with consumption, especially within online spaces. When people open social media sites, they're instantly bombarded with information, advertisements, here's the latest trend, look at what insert celebrity did, you have to take advantage of this amazing deal on TEMU. It's exhausting and insidious in the way it draws people in. These algorithms get people hooked on the dopamine rush they give, but I think what most people don't realize is that as simple as it feels to doom scroll, it actually does take a lot of energy (at least mentally) to process the flood of information being thrown at you when you open sites like Twitter or TikTok. Not to mention dopamine levels generally decrease as the day goes on, so if you waste the early parts of the day doom scrolling and save tasks that are more productive or high effort for later in the day, you don't get the same dopamine "reward" you would otherwise, which leaves people feeling unsatisfied with their efforts.

Why read a book when you can ask ChatGPT to summarize the topic for you? Why spend hours making or searching for ethically produced clothes when Shein has something close enough to what you need for only a few dollars? Why attempt to research a political topic when someone online you generally agree with has already told you how to feel about it? People have become accustomed to instant gratification, and as such are more willing to accept whatever recycled, quick and snappy content is thrown their way.

Another part of it is bullying I think. I'm sure there are plenty of people with great ideas and creations that are simply too afraid to show them to people in fear of being mocked. I see the phrase "bring back bullying" thrown around a lot as if it ever went away. In reality it has just become normalized online. People see a beginner artist post, and then think it's okay to leave passive aggressive comments just because the work isn't up to their standards and it's "just an opinion." Someone introduces an idea that has been lingering in their mind, and if a viewer doesn't immediately understand where that person is coming from, they're quick to brush them off as being too sensitive or unintelligent.

I won't deny that a lot of these issues existed before the internet got to its current state, but I believe it has exacerbated them.

this, this, this. you are so goddamn right. especially "I won't deny that a lot of these issues existed before the internet got to its current state, but I believe it has exacerbated them." I think the anonymity on social media platforms as made it insanely easy to mock people. and who ever does such things doesn't even get punished for it.

Yeah, I agree. So many of the things people say online are things they would never say face to face with a person.

I WAS ABOUT TO COMMENT ABOUT THE SECOND PART. I WANT TO CREATE THINGS BUT I CANT GET MYSELF TO DUE TO FEAR OF COMMITMENT (me problem) OR WORRYING ABOUT IT NOT BEING GOOD ENOUGH (probably a me problem also). drawing fanart is more encouraged than original stuff. like you care somuch about ur own characters and stories, but seeing them mean nothing to other people can hurt, even if u understand they can't read ur mind or feel what u have felt

I totally understand this. Somewhere around five to six years ago I think, I decided I wanted to start sharing my artwork on social media, but found that when I did I began to feel much more self conscious about its quality. Art went from being a fun hobby and way of visual expression to an obligation. Each piece needed to be "social media worthy" and I had to pump them out at a consistent pace if I didn't want my account to lose traction. Eventually I became so overwhelmed that I stopped drawing for a few years.

I think what helps me deal with the thought my work may not be good enough is realizing that it really doesn't need to be. Sometimes I spend days on an art piece or sewing project just for it to not look as great as I imagined, but it doesn't mean the time spent on it was wasted or the effort isn't worth appreciation. Ultimately I learned from it, and being able to apply whatever knowledge or skill I've gained from one project to my future ones bears more long term benefits than whether or not I or the people around me think a specific piece is up to par.

ugh genuinely dude like around 2023 I stopped using social media as much as I did before and it kind of changed the algorithm for me a bit. I also found I was able to control how much I used it in the first place thats when I started to notice how much the people around are like kind of just consuming. I have many friends who enjoy art in various fields. They're always claiming they want to do something after seeing someone do it online, but never doing it. If you have access why not do it, go create!!!

We need you, and I never understood people putting down a beginner artist. They act as if they woke up one day and were just good at art, YOU were like that one time too!! We're supposed to cheer them on, and if they give criticism it's always some passive aggresive way and then, "not to be rude," then it's the cruelest thing ever.

by isa; ; Report

Honestly, I agree with everything you just said, especially the bullying part. There are so many creative people out there who would like to share their work, whether it's drawing, music, or even fashion, and instead of feeling safe enough to share that creativity, many people are scared of judgment and rejection. I feel like we normalized borderline bullying on social media/the internet. For some reason, whenever I talk about this, I think of fashion. (ยฌ_ยฌ")

by Mina; ; Report

I think that for a lot of the population following trends is a way to be liked, or at least not hated, in the latest stages of capitalism we've lost a cultural narrative, the strongest ones we have going are mostly extensions of bullying (which I suppose is true for many cultures, but this one specifically is so aimless hence the descent into shit we're seeing now).

So I think bullying specifically is a way of regaining that control through the lens of consumption. When the bully acts as someone creating content in a sense, where they get validation from their friends and online spaces for well, bullying (e.g taking videos of someone in public), they get to for a moment be able to bask in approval without opening themselves up to attack, for a moment they get to be the consumer and the consumed at the same time while also being able to CREATE SOMETHING NEW (a narrative, i.e 'get that guy RIGHT NOW') in the only framework they understand (social media dynamics). If that makes sense, maybe I'm thinking too fancily.

What I'm saying is, that in their mind they ARE creating, and it's a story where they're maybe not the good guy but 'that guy over there is way worse'.

In a world that is endlessly complex, many people seek the security of knowing exactly who the bad guy is, and when everyone has a camera anyone can be evil, and when being wrong means endless scrutiny nobody ever wants to try. It's just easier to consume consume consume. Even those who don't agree will have to, or risk getting eaten by the horde.

Jerma, surprisingly, said something interesting about this the other day. We're the first generation to have all of this information in the palm of our hand, and it's not really feasible to fully disconnect, not when your friends and your job and so many tools are on there, and it's easy to be swept under the wave of information, but if we can surf it somehow (and do it holding hands), we can know more than any other group of people have together like ever . I just wonder if we can get there.

I never really thought about it this way until I saw how it was affecting my little sister and how she stays so close to trends that it's kind of alarming. I don't have much to add to this conversation that hasn't already been said. Although back then still wasn't so great, i wish she was born into a time where it wasn't as frighenting to express yourself and make creativity in your own way without it being something mass marketed to be consumed. everything has to be a 'core', a 'trend', and pump and dump.. its scary and i feel like we're loosing artists that way too. :/

i think about this daily!! im so certain that ai is just making it worse and worse..im sorry but ill always be skeptical about it and hate generative ai
it is also so sketchy, every app now has ai implemented into it like why ??the helll ??would i need to ask whatsapp ai what to gift someone? its just scary

another thing i think is making this worse,,is the social media scroll reel function because like as someone who sews and draws i know this from myself, i save smth bc i want to create it and then never get around to it and keep scrolling and scrolling and scrolling..till i find another cool idea i save and dont do anything with
but also.. generally speaking itโ€™s also really horrible getting all of your inspo from social media, i feel like youre just hindering your creations potential

its so scary today on how dystopian our lives are becoming, and as a part of our generation, we are doomed, from now to our futures and its sad. I hate it, I hate how advanced technology is, because why go paint when you can ask ChatGPT to make one for you? Why read a book when you have AI generated stories on Wattpad? It saddens me, I look around and wonder, if im the only one that sees this and reading these comments gives me hope.

j honestly think it's because of society forcing kids to "grow up" and loosing your creativity, and A.I as well. While I do belive that A.I can help us and could be used for good things it was just put in the hands of wrong people.

It's the damn cell phone really LOL. Honestly, instead of sitting with our boredom we immediately reach for TikTok/ the internet. When you unplug from the constant stream of information you start to feel the urge to become creative and actually do something. As a society we are too used to constantly having information/media preoccupying our minds, it is more immediately gratifying than creating something.

I don't blame people for their habits though, everything has been intentionally made to get us hooked. Big corporations want us to work constantly and feel stressed with little time to ourselves, and therefore we reach for those instant dopamine hits aka whatever product/service they are trying to sell. Who wants to come home from their awful 40 hour a week job, and then sit with their own feelings of dissatisfaction, sit with the silence of knowing that this is what life is and you have been lied to about how great it is. It's so much easier to turn it all off, and just watch some mindless content that is just a click away that can essentially serve as a shallow replacement to human connections and experiences.

I agree, the lack of creativity is insane and not in a good way at all. (I think at least, right now, its partially due to AI usage that thinks for people)

This reminds me of that study where NASA studied a kindergarden/preschool class for "geniusism" (divergent thinking, which is basically creativity) and most of the class tested positive. They followed them until their were 30, hoping to hire them for NASA, and found that only 2% remained positive for divergent thinking.

Where does all that creativity go??

I believe it's the increase of convenience in people's everyday lives. Sure, students would bully others to write their essay on a book or watch the film version instead of actually reading the damn book. But why do that nowadays when AI is dominant in students' work? even people with great potential are sucked into the convenience of AI.

Why entertain yourself when other people can do it for you? why paint or read or knit or play sports or even watch an hour-long movie when someone can make you laugh and grab your attention in around 15 seconds? and give you the best and quick dopamine rush ever too.
Everything is getting easier. sure, hardship still exists because we are humans and we are designed to find a problem and fix it. But hardship nowadays, especially if you are privileged, is insignificant, unlike then. Why go to the lengths and efforts to create something as beautiful and memorable as an art piece and hone that artistic skill when dopamine is conveniently at the tip of your fingers?

i feel like its just the fact its not lasting super long anymore
I see the creativity ending around middle school/late elementary :(
its like def cus of the whole skipping the cringe phase now
like girls r doing full makeup sets they get from sephora and alot of kids wear outfits that r more "adult" (not saying like inappropriate just.. so plain and clean) like idk why im seeing 11 year old girls online posting a get ready with me and the finial outfit is a gray plain ass lulu lemon outfit and they look like a copy of their mom or older sister
like nothing wrong with that outfit persay just trying to say that maybe the reason creativity is dying at a younger age now is cus of how kids feel the need to grow up so fast
its really sad

I think that why we lack creativity is because of bullying, people fear trying out new things at aren't mainstream and feel like they are going to get hated on and be treated like trash, I experienced something similar, I was wearing something people would call "grandma style" (it's was Mori Kei) in a school full of Nike tech fellas and girls wearing barely anything just for boy approval, of course people like that wouldn't like to see someone be different. People called me names, two dudes tried to make me trip and fall and I just received a lot of glares. People like that always feel the need to bully people into being normal and I hate it. Why can't people be able to express themselves? Why does it bother them so much about my existence that they need to take time out of there day to make fun of me? I'm confused.

i agree with this !!! honestly, i wanna blame it on the lack of designated spaces for young people online. the downfall of MMOs, flash games, etc. i feel closely corrolates to the fact that today's youth is just in an endless cycle of doomscrolling. rather than conversing with people their age, kids are left to doomscroll and inevitably consume media not meant for them. advertisements every other video on tiktok, shein hauls, temu hauls, more and more far-right media... these things nowadays are reaching a scarily broad demographic simply because we have no spaces designated for kids online. in a society where we are constantly consuming, we have no time for creating.

I have a different opinion tbh, AI art sucks, I don't think anyone would disagree with that. I would say though, AI cannot create art in the traditional sense. Art in my definition is expression of a message so complicated, grand, and thought provoking, it cannot possibly be communicated verbally. You can only pitch idea's to AI that you can write down, it can't comprehend anything abstract because it's a robot, it has no conscious or creativity. All it can really do is create the best product it possibly can according to the prompt and people are going to get tired of hearing the same prompt over and over again because inevitably what else is it to do, create a new one? At some point I predict the mainstream might want something prompt-less, something more human. Or maybe that thought is how I cope with the death of creativity and original artistic idea's in the day we live in. Idk tbh

i feel like this is one of the many things included in the generational hate cycle, unfortunately artistically creative minds have always been a minority in life and most likely always will be, which is why it could seem like the newer generations are not as creative as the previous ones. It could also be a case of the less creative ones being more present/loud/attention grabbing compared to creative people who I feel are more withdrawn. Just my thoughts
