seeking advice.....

so i'm coming up to the time of year where i'm going to have to start applying for uni (which is absolutely terrifying) - the only issue is, i can't decide what i want to do. i'm torn between taking creative writing (which is honestly my one true passion, and what i've wanted to do for a career for a very long time), or taking history (which is definitely more stable). the issue is, i love history a lot, but i don't have a passion for it the same way i do for creative writing. but then again, in today's world, is passion really a good enough justification for such a huge decision that will affect my future???

input from experienced academics would be greatly valued!!!!

Funny enough I have both studied history at university and written a few things. I've published one novel and a few academic papers. The two aren't mutually exclusive by any means.
That being said, History isn't exactly an in-demand career field either. Unless you intend to teach at a school, it's rather difficult to monetize a history degree, since research grants are highly competitive and foundation positions (like museums and such) quite rare. In this light, you might as well do whichever you enjoy more. Also, your decision isn't final by any means. Before I finally zeroed in on history and philosophy, I actually spent two semesters in law and economy respectively, believe it or not. So even though it may seem a matter of utmost urgency at this moment in time, it really isn't as damning a choice to make.

You could definitely make a good career out of creative writing by being an author. Even in the modern day there are still plenty of people who love and appreciate a good book
